Babies on the Brain

Boss and baby

Okay so my hubby and I have been planning a trip to Italy for like 3 years. Our plan was always to start TTC after/ during the trip. I started a new job about 6 months ago and found out my boss is TTC as well but is having trouble. I haven't told her my plan but don't want to end up on maternity leave when she does if she ever gets pregnant. Should I talk to her now or just wait until I'm pregnant? The trip is in June!

Re: Boss and baby

  • The likelihood that you would end up on maternity leave at the same time are probably super low. You can hardly plan when you will get pregnant, let alone her. I would not bring this up with your boss, honestly. You'll both end up getting pregnant when you get pregnant - no need to talk it out first.

    I agree with this.

  • Are you going to delay TTC until you boss gets pregnant? Probably not, so I wouldn't worry about if you end up on maternity leave at the same time.  If there is one thing I have learned over the last 22 months, it is that you can't always plan when you are going to have a baby.

  • Yeah, don't bring it up now.  There are way too many unknowns in the TTC process and as pp said, the chances of you being on maternity leave at the same time are low.  Honestly, if your boss is having trouble TTC, the last thing she probably wants to hear is that you are thinking of starting TTC and hope to be pg soon.  Just tell her when you're actually pregnant.

  • Yes, I would not mention it. There are just too many unknowns in the whole equation and your family planning is none of your boss's business. I would wait to cross that bridge until I got to it...

  • Definitely do not tell her in advance. You could also have trouble conceiving; however, it would be so insensitive to tell her in advance and a few weeks later say "im pregnant!!!!" knowing she is having trouble. Then she would know it took you so little time. You are also essentially free sharing information about your sex life with your boss which is beyond inappropriate. Just don't.

The maternity leave situation will work itself out. You are entitled to it and your employer will have to make due.

  • Another note... after you do get pregnant, I would wait until 12 weeks to share it with work. This is just customary. Then I would go to your boss in private to tell her your news and discuss how you plan to tell the office and what implications your maternity leave will have in the future.

Just wanted to add that. :) Best of luck in your travels and trying for baby!

No. That is what some people decide. Some wait longer, some tell earlier.

Hm... yes, you could just go post on facebook when you are 6 weeks pregnant but the majority of people choose to wait to reveal this information once they are in the 2nd trimester. It really is a bit of a faux pas otherwise, particularly if you have a friend (or boss!) dealing with infertility.

You are right that some wait longer. That is fine too but not advisable when you have a work situation where you are going to be taking maternity leave that will affect others. Technically you don't have to tell anyone at any point... but that would probably get pretty awkward eventually.
