How long to get used to pacifier?

My pediatrician had me supplement with formula until my milk came in on day 5. Well now my 2 week old will not go to sleep without a bottle. I nurse him for 45 minutes every 2 hours and still have to give him a bottle after. I am now pumping so his bottle is breastmilk instead of formula. So I am pulling double duty.

I think most of it could be resolved if he would take a paci but he sucks on it for a minute or 2 and spits it outs and then cries.  Is there a breaking in time for paci's?

  • With my first it took a couple months for her to have enough muscle control in her mouth to keep it in.

My girls liked the soothie type pacifier over every other kind. Try different kinds to see if your lo prefers something specific.

DD has been using hers since she was about 4 weeks. I have several different kinds but she prefers the Nuk. I just bought 2 extra so she has them when she starts day care this week. They are more contoured to fit her mouth better and are more formed to her face (the sides don't stick out) so she has a harder time dislodging it when waving her little arms around. Hope this helps.

Yea, I think that is part of the problem. We started with an Advent one, then switched to the soothie. He normally does okay but everytime he moves it catches on something and gets knocked out. I will try the Nuk next. Thanks!

  • My 4.5 month old still has trouble keeping it in her mouth. But I am starting to think she just isn't a paci kid.

Some just don't like them, my FB from day one was attached too hers, but this time around, I find it's just easier to not offer the paci unless I have no other solution, because it just comes flying out every 5 seconds.

  • DS2 has only just now started accepting the paci and he is 11 weeks tomorrow. Even now it really depends on his mood.

  • We have the opposite problem... After drinking a bottle, DS is really fussy and just wants to suck at my boob even though I know he's had plenty to eat. A paci does help to soothe him but he can't hold it in his mouth yet. I will rock him or hold him and bounce him while helping to hold the paci in his mouth and he will settle down/fall asleep. Also, you can try different brands... Our son likes NUK best, but lots of people swear by MAM and they make a very lightweight newborn pacifier. They also have both silicone and latex to choose from.
