BM storage question

I'm trying to build up my BM stash for my LO who starts daycare next week and at the same time trying to get her to take a bottle...so when I try and give her the bottle and it doesn't go well do I have to waste that BM or can I freeze it afterwards?? I hate wasting it!!!

Re: BM storage question

  • I don't know if you know this but just in case you don't.   The literature I have says you can store BM like this.  on the counter room temp. 4-6 hours.  In the fridge, 5 days, in a deep freeze 6-12 months and I think in the freezer of your fridge for a month or few months cant remember for sure.

So that being said. If you have left over milk and it has not been out at room temp for more than 6 hours and has not been frozen before then yes I would definitely freeze it... that stuff is liquid gold.

  • If she's sucked on the nipple/taken part of the bottle, you can refrigerate it and offer it at the next feed. After that you need to pitch it because of bacteria that's entered into the milk. I would just start with very small amounts in the bottle and have extra there if she takes it, rather than starting with a standard sized bottle.

I go by the 5-5-5 rule for BM. 5 months in the freezer, 5 days in the fridge, 5 hours on the counter. If the baby hasn't finished a bottle and I can't or won't give it at th next feeding, I will put it in the fridge with a 24 hour expiration.
