Success after IF

Update and Vent

Well I had my gallbladder removed on Thursday. I pumped right before we left home and expected things to move quickly but I was sooo wrong. Surgery took longer than expected and we were gone about 12 hours. I pumped as soon as I got home but my supply still hasn't recovered. I'd had trouble with my supply to begin with, so I'm really sad at the setback. We were at least already supplementing with formula but I had been proud of my progress.

I'm still very sore and uncomfortable. TMI but doing number 2 is horrible again. Before it was because I was afraid I'd tear my stitches now it's...well because I don't want to strain and hurt my incisions and I don't know why else.

I'm just really bummed. I'd been getting LO into a routine, finally felt rested, and now everything is nuts again. She turned one month old yesterday and we have her pediatrician appt tomorrow. And I only have two weeks off left with her unless I can convince my surgeon or OB to extend my leave. Sorry for the Debbie downer post! I'm sure things will look up soon but right now I'm just sad things have gone downhill so quickly.

You are a tough cookie momma! There is so much you can do to try and help your supply along. I hope things settle down and your body can heal quickly! I would think one of your docs would extend your leave. I mean, not only did you have a baby, you had surgery too! You need some more time to recover!

  • I'm so sorry, that all sounds so frustrating. Hopefully you'll get your supply back as your body heals. Good luck hope you heal quickly!

  • Here is the deal. You have been through a lot and its hard enough having to adjust to having a LO and deal with what you have. I strongly urge you to plead with your doctors to keep you out longer from work. You need more time to heal physically and emotionally. Im sorry about the BFing. Its so hard especially with keeping up the supply. Hang in there mama and huge hugs to you.

  • First of all, sending you lots of {hugs}. You've been through so much lately, and please don't be so hard on yourself.  You're doing the best you can, so try to relax and enjoy your time with your LO.  Supplementing is not the end of the world, and sometimes just stressing itself can cause supply to dip.  i hope your doctors can extend your leave, it sounds like you most certainly can use more time off!

Huge hugs hon. You've been through so much! I really hope one I your docs will extend your leave. It sounds like you really need it. You're doing a great job. You can try oatmeal, flaxseed, brewers yeast, mothers milk tea, fenugreek, or more milk plus to increase your supply. Or pumping extra or power pumping. But it's also understandable if you feel like you've been through enough and just want to bf what you can and supplement the rest. I hope you are feeling better soon.

I am so sorry.....I also had surgery at 3 weeks pp and it was tough. Tough to recover, tough with BFing. I get it and I am sorry you have to go through this!  I sure hope someone extends your leave!

  • Ugh!!!

First off; sorry about the supply... Definetely try some of the suggestions above; I know many people who had luck with some of what was mentioned.

As for your frustrations; even without surgery I've experienced some of what you mentioned.... For example at 4 weeks DD was developing a set sleep pattern, giving me good stretches and I felt rested.....since then she's all over the place and I feel like I'm going to lose my mind again..... I think it's very common with new babies and in your situation compounded with surgery so so don't beat yourself up.

I would be floored if your dr's wouldn't extend your leave for you.... But a friend of mine who had issues with BFing answer supply was able to get the pediatrician to extend her leave.....no idea of this will work for you but may want to mention it tomorrow!

Hang in there mama. Big hugs!

I'm sorry for everything you're going through! Hopefully things will all get back to normal for you quickly. I have to agree with pp about trying some things to help your supply. Mother's Milk tea worked wonders for me when I was BF. Good luck!
