Working Moms

Hours vs Location

I work for a University and I am considering asking for a transfer to a campus that is about 10 miles closer to home (so saves me about 20 miles of driving each day)

My only hesitation is that I currently work until 3:30 and, if I were to transfer to the closer campus, I would have to work until 5. I really do like getting home before 4:30, but the closer commute would be nice-

WWYD? Just wanted to hear a few other opinions before I meet with my boss.

Thanks

If it were me.  I'd enjoy getting home so early.  5 is peak rush hour so would that drive be impacted by heavy traffic?  If so that drive could be about the same if not much longer.  Are you happy where you are currently and enjoy the people you work with?  If it's just a commute issue and nothing else I wouldn't move.  I currently drive an hour to work.  I personally, would rather an extra hour in the evening with my son rather than an extra hour in the morning when we'd both be sleeping.

  • To me, the 10 mile change in commute would not make up for having to stay later.  I would much rather be home earlier, and the difference in mileage isn't enough to make a difference, in my book.

  • Are there any other advantages to the new versus old position other than commute? Around here, that 20 minutes would easily be eaten up by 5pm traffic. Without any other differences, I'd stay where I was at because that extra time at night (even with a little more lost to commute) makes the evenings seem so much longer.

  • I'd much rather be home earlier than shave 20 min off a drive.  If you are getting home 2 hrs later, then does the 20 minutes matter?  Agree with pp that I'd use just as much time/gas in traffic at 5:00 too.
