Time of bedtime routine?

This early on, are you able to start your bedtime routine at around the same time every evening? I've been wanting to work around her feeding schedule, but the times of her nighttime feedings change. Ideally my routine at this time would be bath, PJs, feed, cuddle, sleep. Her bedtime has been around 8:00 to 8:30. So if she eats at 7:00pm, then I suppose feeding wouldn't be included in the routine, but then it's not really a routine... I'm probably thinking too much about this, but how important is it to do things exactly the same every night? Any tips? If feeding is at 7:00 should I just start the routine earlier?

Re: Time of bedtime routine?

  • My DS is a few weeks younger than your DD, but our bedtime varies depending on his schedule. We usually start between 8 and 9, which gets him into the crib between 8:45 and 10. I am more concerned that we follow the same routine each night than that we do it at the exact same time. You kind of have to work around LO's schedule at this time, But you may find that she settles into a routine and is doing things around the same time every night, even if it's not exact.

  • We start things around 7:00 or 7:30 and include feeding in the routine. If the last feed falls around 7 then we try bed around 7:30, and if the last feeding is at 7:30 we try for bed around 8. All depend on what time he takes a late afternoon snooze. Today I am getting ready to feed him at 5, so he will be ready to eat again anytime between 7:00 and 7:30 and I will try to put him to sleep for the night after that feeding. TRY being the key word :
  • We seem to be out of the norm but we start bedtime between 930 ad 10 and then LO sleeps from 11 till 300 or 330.

We tried 8 or 9 but she always wakes up at 1030 or 11 to eat.

We do the same time every day no matter what. At first it was a little rough with the timing of her afternoon feedings, but as we stuck to the schedule her feedings just settled in around bedtime. What works for us is at 7pm we do a bath, then feed, then swaddle and put to bed. At first if she was hungry close to bathtime I'd give her just a little snack to tide her over. She'd be fussy but we'd stick it out. It just worked because eating was the very last thing before bed. Shell sleep 4 to 6 hours at a time, so usually falls asleep by 8pm, up btwn 1 and 3 am for a feed, then sleeps until btwn 7 and 9.
