I got this one, but I'm pretty sure it was cheaper than this. We had the Sleep sheep too, which is what I used with DD#1 but I wanted something that stayed on all night. It also had a night light that stays on all night which is perfect for the middle of the night feedings. The sound selection isn't the best, but it's loud which is all that matters!
search on youtube.com white noise. they have several channels that provide sleeping sounds for babies ranging anywhere from 30 min to 10 hrs. best part is that it's free and effective!
Sorry I can't recommend a white noise machine. Instead, I downloaded white noise tracks from iTunes onto an iPod we're no longer using and have it on repeat all night. It's kinda cute... our LO already has her own iPod and docking station You could also turn a radio on to static, I've heard it works well for many babies.
thanks for the advice - I'm really looking for an actual machine. We only have one laptop and are not going to leave it in his room all night - we have a ceiling fan too but I'm looking for something louder
We have the Munchkin one that also has a nightlight and projector as well as multiple sounds other than white noise. It was $20 on Amazon and we love it!
We use the Brookstone sound machine. It's about 80, but totally worth it. Ava has had hers for 2.5 years and its still going strong. We like it so much that we bought another one this time around for Mila.
what about a mama bear? i have one and it makes a heartbeat noise as tho baby is still inside. it goes off only when you turn it off and it has an adjustable volume. it can get pretty loud. it also has straps that you can use to attach it to the crib. i have ours hanging in the corner of the crib, above the baby's head, where they can't get stuck in it should they roll over there.

Will check out the Graco one

We have this one and love it. Lots of sound options and it can stay on just for a time or constant on. We have two now, one for each child.
I got them at Bed Bath & Beyond and I think they were under $20 with a coupon.
