Baby Names

Isla

Trying to decide on a name for our little girl. We love Isla but are concerned about mispronunciation. Suggestions are appreciated.

Isla Rose
Penelope but don't like Penny
Annabelle

i adore the name Isla, it would be my #1 if DH didn't veto it. People will mispronounce it, but I think with the popular actress of the same name, it will be less than you think

  • I like Isla, but I do think you will encounter some mispronunciations from those not familiar with the name. That wouldn't stop me from choosing it though. Isla Rose is lovely.

I like Penelope second. You could use Nelly/Nellie as a nickname.

Annabelle is just okay to me. Too cutesy or something. I like just Anna much better.

  • Isla is becoming pretty popular so I wouldn't worry too much about mispronunciation. I love it. It is DD2 middle name.
My 2 girls, both born on a Friday the 13th, are exactly 2 years, 2 months, 2 hours and 2 minutes apart! And Baby Boy joined us October 11, 2013! image

  • Isla is beautiful! I think it's becoming common enough that most people would know how to pronounce it.

  • We shied away from it for the same reason.  I think it's absolutely beautiful though!

  • I love Isla. The people IRL who have named their daughter that all needed to (or felt the need to) clarify how it's pronounced on FB.

But I think once you tell people once, they'll get it.

  • Isla is my favorite on your list and Isla Rose is a simple but pretty combo. I do think some people will mispronounce the name at first if they are not familiar with it. I can't stand the name penelope (if im not mistaken wasn't that a movie about a pig nosed girl named penelope?) I love the name Annabelle I have it on my name for a future daughter. It used to remind me of a cow due to a cartoon with a cow named Annabelle but that association has started to die down for me.

DD is named Isla.  We do get " Iz La" quite a bit, but once you say it people get it. I worried that it was trendy, but ultimately we loved it and went with it. It is still safely in the 200s which I think makes it uncommon, but not obscure.  It is funny because people think it is the most unique of all my kids names, but Reed and Pierce are actually far less common according to SSA list.
  • I prefer Penelope & Annabelle over Isla.

  • I love all three of your names! I think Isla is popular enough that it won't get mispronounced often. My second choice would bd Annabelle, though I also love Penelope.

  • You'd have to be pretty inept to mispronounce Isla. It's a very common name. My cousins little girl is Isla Rose. Very girly name x

Out of curiosity, how is Isla supposed to be pronounced? I speak Spanish, so I would pronounce it like the Spanish word for island and say "Ees-la."

    Does it have another origin?

It is pronounced Eye-La.  It is Scottish and pretty common in Europe and Australia (top 20 I think).

  • I love Isla but DH said No.

Soory but I would prononce it in spanish and I would not name my daughter island. Why is there an s in it if it is pronounced without it? My vote would be for Annabelle

  • I have an Isla Rose, although spelled differently because it is a family name and our family has always spelled it Ila. Peop do mispronounce it all the time, and seem to have a surprisingly hard time with it. Sometimes I explain that it's pronounced just like Isla, but lots of people don't get that either.

I don't like Annabelle, I do like Penelope but there are other nn options.. Poppy, Pippa, Nelly are some that I have heard.
    Waiting for #3!

  • Another Isla here, and yes, it will be mispronounced.  I think since it's just now getting more popular, it's still new to a lot of people.  I think by the time my DD is in kindergarten, it'll be no big deal.

BTW, I constantly get compliments on what a beautiful name it is.  I say go for it!

This is funny to me. You do know that the word Island has a silent s, right? What about isle or aisle... Isla is the traditional spelling and it isn't a Spanish name.

FWIW, I went to the spanish pronounciation too and I don't speak Spanish.  I have quite literally never heard the word pronounced any other way.  I've never met/red/heard of Eye-La in my life until this board.

It might not be a spanish name but it is a spanish word and I know more people who speak spanish than have the name Isla...

This is probably the reason that i pronounce it the way I do. Sorry, I do know that the english language has silent S es in it. But this is are real word in a communly spoken language and to me it seems like a made up name. So to pronounce it I go with what I know. Plus I can't imagine it being popular in most countries in Europe because in most languages you pronounce the letters you see. But to each there own. If you guys want to name your daughter Isla and pronounce it Eyela than go for it! I would never do it but it isn't my child.

I think the op should choose Annabelle because that is a much prettier name imo and it will be prnounced correctly.
