Breastfeeding

Slow flow vs variable flow

Which nipple is close to breast. I have evening supply issues so we have to supplement with pumped BM for the last couple bottles of the day. She seems to be getting frustrated at the breast now so I want to make her bottle time harder.

We have tommee tippee bottles with num 1, slow flow nipples but I also have a pack of variable flow ones that we haven't used yet.

I did buy a dr browns premie bottle today to try as well but I'd love to stick with Tommie tippee brand since we har all the accessories for them.

Re: Slow flow vs variable flow

  • I don't know anything about the variable flow nipples, but we use Dr. Brown's with the preemie nipples for our breastfed baby and have had no issues going back and forth.

    We just had success today with the Medela Calma nipple. We just introduced a bottle a few days ago and it was not going well at all. Today was the second try with the Calma and it went almost perfect!! There is no milk flow without the baby sucking and they can pause and breath like they do at the breast. Good luck!

  • We used the Nuby variable flow nipples at the start of LOs feedings to try to strengthen his mouth muscles, then we switched nipples to a faster flow for thermainder of the feeding so LO could eat.

  • Playtex drop-ins -- slow flow. This one worked great for us. Now that she is older she uses the avent bottles with the #2 nipple and she will still nurse just fine.

    Is there any way you can return some of your Tommie tippees? Usually they recommend having a few different types of bottles on hand in case LO doesn't like one or another.

    We dont have a ton of the TT, maybe 10 total but it's all the matching accessories. We have a few other ones that were either freebies or gifts but all are just a faster flow than I want her to have yet as she is only 4 weeks. I don't want her toget lazy and prefer easy bottle over the work at the boob.

    LO actually likes them really well, as do we, I just hasn't anticipated introducing her to a bottle at this age and want to try and keep it as natural as possible so we don't wreck the nursing we can do. In another month or two I think the TT will be great.

  • I have no real idea but we use tt Colic type bottles and ventaire wide mouth and have found the tt one nipples seemto be as fast as the level two ventaire so I do wonder if the tt nipples are fast

    The variable flow will be REALLY fast, its a cross cut and more suitable for thickened feeds.An LC that I saw gave some tips for making bottles less appealing than the breast:nbsp; 1.nbsp; Hold the bottle horizontal, it will slow the flow.nbsp; 2.nbsp; Hold the baby away from your body not drawn in like when you BF 3.nbsp; Do compressions while you BF to make the milk come faster for instant gratification.nbsp; nbsp;

    The variable flow nipples I have change flow rate depending on how hard lo sucks. The are NOT cross cut. Cross cut nipples have either an X or a Y shaped opening instead of a simple hole.
