Anyone else suspect allergies?

I know that they say they can't have seasonal allergies but what about pet allergies? I don't remember when the congestion came but I know at 6 weeks DS started having a cough and runny nose and it seems it just never went away. We have had brief periods where he just sounded congested and did not cough so much but those times only lasted a day or two. His eyes water almost every time I feed him. His dr does not seem worried because DS is so happy, he sleeps for the most part...he wakes up coughing some I give him his paci and turn on the sea horse and he goes back to sleep. this usually happens about 4 times throughout the night. Also he eats but only eats 2426 oz a day and was only 13 lb 15oz at his 4 month checkup putting him in the 25 for weight. Just wondering if anyone else is having the same experience? We have one small dog and my sister who watches him during the week has a dog and cat. If anyone has any helpful insight I would love to hear it. TIA

Re: Anyone else suspect allergies?

  • I have the same worries with my LO. DH has a ton of allergies so it is always something we are concerned about. DD is congested a lot. She is by far the worst in the mmorning. But she is pretty good at clearing her nose. I am always shocked by how much she sneezes out. She also has times where it goes to the back of her throat and she chokes/gags on it. Its been bad enough that she freaks out and spits up all over the place. Poor honey...
My Dr was not overly concerned. She said to put a humidifier in her room to see if that helps. It doesn't. And to suck out any mucous that I can in the morning. We talked about allergies, but they can't get tested until they are 3 years old.
So I guess I dont have so much advise, more just that youre not alone!

Yep that sounds like DS. I just wish if he is allergic to the dog I could do something about it. For now I think I am going to start vacuuming everyday and maybe start bathing the dog 1 to 2 times a week. I know it's not good for the dog but if it helps DS and makes it so we can keep the dog I will do it. Glad to know I am not alone though. Thanks!

  • I am slightly allergic to cats and my friends had an air purifier when I stayed with them and that helped a lot. So maybe consider one of those.
But good luck! If you find something that works/helps let me know!

Please don't abandon your dog because of a fear of allergies. Dog fur allergies are actually very rare. Do some serious research. If you think pet dander is aggravating baby then the vacuuming and proper grooming will eliminate the issue. It's much more likely to be an environmental allergen like smoke, dirt, or pollen which can show up very early on. Pollen around the country is at its peak right now.
According to my pedi the nasal congestion is normal also babies can get very mucousy and congested when teething. Good luck!

  • It can totally be seasonal! When our oldest was about 2-3 months old we noticed that he had symptoms of seasonal allergies. When we were outside he would always have a clear and runny nose, sneezing like a maniac, and itchy/watery eyes. I mentioned it to his pedi when he was an infant and she said that it was unlikely for a baby to have seasonal allergies. Well, this continued all the way to his 2 year appointment and she finally agreed that it was seasonal allergies. She put him on claritin daily and he is soooo much better. He used to get ear infections regularly up until then and now we know it was from allergies. He hasn't had one since he started the claritin in February. There's really nothing to be done before 2 years old though, if it is seasonal allergies, since they can't take claritin before 2. Hopefully your LO has seasonal allergies and it's not because of the pets. That would be sad Sad
