Babies: 0 - 3 Months

Confused...

My son is 6 weeks. My pedi or pedi office isn't open tomorrow, so just trying to get some insight if I can.

For the past week or so, his poop has been declining. From twice a day to (for the last three days) once a day. He is both breast and formula fed. I feed him Similac Advanced since I started supplementing three weeks ago. Well the last day or so his one poop has been green and very watery. I do not know if this is diarrhea because it still has the small milk curds in it and it doesn't stink.

He has also been spitting up a lot more and it is starting to smell acidic. He sometimes gulps an hour later which is leading me to believe he has reflux..

I do not know if this is making him as fussy as he is or he is going through growth spurt which is causing this crying/fussing a lot. Today he is even waking up in the middle of his naps due to grunting and moving a lot. He is crying each and every time I try to put him to sleep.. it isn't overtiredness because sometimes he gives cues to go back to bed right after waking and eating and so I try to put him down to bed and he fights it even though his eyes droop down and he stops for a second to sleep.. then wakes back up to fight... back and forth for half an hour. (I have tried swaddle, unswaddled, singing, rocking, shushing, walking).

For the record I haven't changed my diet, nor changed formulas since him being on it; he has had normal poop consistency and frequency last week...

Has anyone had experience with poop like this and/or fighting sleep?

Re: Confused...

  • The fussyness is likely tandem with the infamous six week growth spurt. Also around this time poops become less frequent and you shouldn't have anything to worry about unless you see blood or it comes out in pellets constipation. We are just ending the 6 week growth spurt and through it, it was like someone switched my baby for a little terror. Hang in there!

Ugh, we just went through the growth spurt craziness too, although our LO did not necessarily slow down with the pooping. Now that I think about it though, I would have expected him to be dirtying up more diapers at the rate he was eating, which was insane! Anyway, that's probably all it is, but I still don't think there is any harm in calling your pedi tomorrow to ask about the spitting up thing--you'll just feel better.

    Good luck!!!

  • Thanks you two. Here is hoping things return to normal soon.
