Toddlers: 12 - 24 Months

When to PT

DD is almost 14 moths old so I know I have a few months but I think she will PT early. She already squats down when she poops and Thursday she popped a squat twice when she didn't have a diaper on and peed in the floor. She isn't very verbal but she has hit most of her other milestones early. Maybe I am reading too much into it, I dunno. Thoughts?

Re: When to PT

  • If you want to start now, look into elimination communication.  The best site is diaperfreebaby.  Basically you look for your LO's cues and also help them start reacting to your cues (making a specific noise when she's on the potty to signal her that it's ok to go).  I'm starting with it this summer and my LO is only 12 months.  If you think she's ready, go for it, but don't make a big deal on days with a lot of misses.  :)

  • There's no harm in introducing the potty or having her sit on it occasionally. Just don't expect anything yet. She may learn to pee and poop on it but full she may not be fully trained until 2. Some signs that your kid is ready is waking up from naps dry and telling you before she needs to pee or poop.

  • I look for cues and will sit Asher on the potty. We did this with all of our kids and some potty trained easily, others like my three year old took longer (still working on it). I'd give it a go and if it works out, great, but if it takes a bit longer, no big deal, each child will get eventually when they are ready:) Good luck!
