I haven't made the switch yet, but I'm watching for signs that he can climb on the couch unassisted. The toddler bed I think would be the same height, and I want to know he can get back in bed by himself before converting the crib.

I hadn't even thought about him getting back in bed. I'm most worried about him waking up at night and wanting to play with his toys and what not. I think he is almost ready and if we do switch we can return the unopened crib we just bought for DS2. I might try for a couple nights and see what happens.
We switched to a twin when he was about 20 months. He was able to climb out of his crib and we were moving, so we decided to just do all the transitions (new house, new room, new bed) at once.
It went very smoothly, so I wouldn't really do anything different.
Dd will be two in July, and we aren't concerned now. She absolutely loves her crib, sleeps 10 to 12 hours in it every night and has never tried climbing out. With a new baby coming in less than three weeks we aren't rushing the big stuff, especially if she isn't climbing out of her crib.
We got orders to move to a new base, so we may toss a twin mattress in her room once we move and see how she does. She thinks adult beds equal play time, so we shall see. I'm just not going to put us through unnecessary stress if she's happy in her bed now.
DS hates playpens and cribs and climbs in and out of bed great. His side rails protect him and he sleeps much better than when we were co-sleeping because he doesn't have the bigger area to move around on! (:
We were told by our doc that switching to the toddler bed is usually something people rush too soon and it ends up messing with their kid's sleep pattern unnecessarily early. Once baby can consistently climb in/out of the crib, it's time to switch. We are surprised that LO hasn't climbed out yet, but we are definitely keeping him in until he climbs out (unless he hasn't attempted to do so by around 2.5 years or so). LO has also been climbing up on the (tall) couch since he was around 12 months old.
Even though we haven't done it yet so I don't have real advice for the switch, I would say to wait until it's absolutely necessary to switch!

Thinking out loud....
