using basic video monitor for mobile child?

I am guessing the ability to remotely move your video monitor isn't essential if you have a crib bound baby. However, I am looking for a monitor for my soon to be toddler, and was wondering if I can get away with one that doesn't pan/ tilt etc even if the kid's more mobile/ not crib-bound. Basically, will a basic single camera let me have a bird's eye view of the room, if I position it right? Or should I get one that lets me pan/ scan the room? Thanks so much!

(Was thinking about this one versus the Motorolas)

  • We don't have one that pans.  It's positioned to show just her bed.  Sometimes we don't see her because she fell asleep on the floor or is still playing but that's NBD for us.

  • I think you could probably position it to get a good view of at least most of the room, depending on the layout. We have that monitor and have loved it, but I just have our's on a high shelf pointing directly down into the crib. I'm planning to get a second camera for it when 2 arrives.
