October 2013 Moms

Reading

So I have been reading up a lot on baby stuff in general, due October 3rd. And yesterday read up on the affects of smoking on infants weather it's direct, second, or third hand smoke! Which totally freaked me out! Both my MIL and FIL chain smoke! In their home and cars and my DH is expecting me to spend a lot of weekends there while the baby is still under 3 months, they won't smoke around the baby but they will still smoke in an upstairs room because "the window is open" regardless everything is covered in the toxins including them and my husband does not see any harm in it and tells me I'm over reacting :/ (neither of us smoke) I don't know how else to approach it with out upsetting DH but I get sick being in the house so I'm afraid the baby will too? It's our first LO so I want to make sure she is safe obviously! Anyone else been in a similar situation or have any input on how to handle?

Re: Reading

  • I went through something similar. My ILs chain smoke but they live half way across the country so I don't see them often. I've been there once since being pregnant and they were really good about not smoking in the house around me. Although the house itself smells like smoke and they would smoke in a different room with the door closed and the smoke would seep through the vents. I didnt bring it up cause I saw they were trying.

They started taking a prescription drug the day we left to help them quit smoking and I hope it works. If not when we visit i'm staying in a hotel. DH hates the smoking as well and will def back me up on not smoking around me and especially the baby.

I would bring it up to your H again and have some solid facts showing the affects it could have on the baby. Hopefully he'll back you up.

Both my in laws somje as well they smoke in there house too, just the finished basement no upstairs I read several articles about how bad it is too, so I printed them and emailed them to DH and then in our infant care class the teacher talked about smokers holding baby and and even second hand smoke and such how it was really not good! so it took him a while but he eventually got it!! I gave him the task of talking to his parents and I talked to my sister also a smoker so it worked out in the end, don't force the issue on him to act now, just keep sending him articles/or anything else and hopefully he will get that it is important
  • I agree with PP and having facts to back up your concerns. Maybe print up some articles for him to read.

  • Babies absorb smoke through their skin from the clothing of others even. Do they plan to shower and change clothes after each smoke? Better for everyone if they quit.

  • Thanks everyone, I have had a few issues with his family in the past I.e. rude comments about the wedding I spent months planning, telling me I'm a stuck up city girl! Etc... And he always seems to side with them, but I am going to gather more info and sit him down and hopefully get through to him on the topic
