Deswaddling

Jack is 11 weeks today, and Wednesday night I cold turkey de swaddled him. We only have one sleep sack swaddle that fits and during his night time feeding he peed on it while I was changing his diaper. I put him in the sleep sack and has seemed fine. I figured I'd just stick with the sleep sack since he adjusted well. I watch him in the monitor when I put him down for bed at 8 and his arms do flail around a little and I've had to go in maybe once or twice to soothe which I didn't have to do when he was swaddled. Should I switch him back to the swaddle now that its washed or just stick to the sleep sack since he seems to be adjusting to it? Btw I only swaddled him at night, not during the day.

Re: Deswaddling

  • I swaddled my DD for the first4 or  5 months, nighttime only as well. After about 3 months, I only swaddled her upper body to keep her from flailing. And then I transitioned her to sleep sacks. Try a night unswaddled and see how he does, or if he's up too much tonight, swaddle him. Sleep is precious and I'm only at the 3 week mark with this baby so I'm still getting up a few times a night and will do anything to encourage baby's nighttime sleep ;)

  • We didn't wean either of the first 2 boys from swaddling until they were 3 or 4 months old, but I didn't try any sooner to know how it would have gone.  If he's doing well in the sleepsack, you certainly don't need to swaddle him.  We transitioned to the Halo brand sleepsacks when we stopped swaddling, and I was surprised how easily both of them adjusted.  Good luck
