Natural Birth

YAY!!

Totally did not know we had a natural birth section on TB!! Super excited cause I get conflicting messages whenever I talk about it on my September board...I am 23 weeks tomorrow and we are having a natural birth. We went with a Doula after switching from a MW (best decision I made cause I am so much more relaxed with my doula) but we are still very much concerned about having a "hospital birth" We will basically from what my Doula says just using the room. No nurses, doctor, or interventions and we can go home when they clear us at a 100%... so basically it sounds to me like we will get the natural birth, we just have to use a hospital room...anyone else have an experience like this? I am a FTM so I want to and do trust my doula, was just hoping I could get some good feedback from you NB ladies :) Thanks in advance!

Re: YAY!!

  • I wasn't aware that doula's could deliver babies in a hospital?

  • Our state they do (WI) but like I mentioned she told us basically all we are doing is using the room...she brings all of her equipment to the hospital and she does everything...

That's very interesting. This is the 1st I am hearing of that, too. What type of training do doula's in WI get?

  • Doulas are meant to offer support, not catch the baby or do any other medical procedures, so I'm a little confused by this.  Also I'm really having trouble believing that a hospital would agree to let someone just use their room.  That seems like a huge liability for a hospital.  Have you called the hospital and made sure that this is really the case?  What about prenatal care, who does this?
  • Yes we have called the hospital cause she was the one that said she goes through this certain hospital...the "doctor" we have is a Family Practitioner so he is my doctor till the birth and he is through this hospital as well. He is very "hands off" and very okay with our no vaccinations, no interventions requests which is awesome. He will be at the hospital when I am giving birth but for the most part will have nothing to do with it. I guess that is how they do it in WI...I guess this is not the usual lol
  • My husband will be catching the baby as well which we are thrilled about :)

That explanation makes more sense than your 1st one. Your original post implied that the doula was either doing the prenatal care, or you weren't getting any (that's how I interpreted it). I have heard of women using family doctors instead of OBs.

The family doctor not being in the room when you deliver is the only thing I am confused about. Also, the lack of interruptions from the nurses/hospital staff. It seems like someone would come in that room at some point since you are using their facility.

Yeah, this. How can someone without medical training be the only one present at a delivery in a hospital? That does not sound right at all. As an L&D RN, we try our darndest to not be the only practitioner in the room at delivery. It happens on the rare occasion, but would never be planned for. This whole thing sounds really odd.

  • We did the Bradley Method husband coached birth in the hospital. It was great. I woukd recommend midwife and doula at the hospital.
  • Yeah this makes no sense. Doulas do not deliver babies.
