XP: Non-ceiling fan

Hi! I posted this in Nurseries and Baby Gear but I thought you girls might have some good insight.   We currently don't have a ceiling fan in our nursery and my DH isn't very handy to install one.  I'm not sure if getting one installed now is in our budget. So we're considering a regular fan...

We're looking to get a fan for the nursery since the upstairs gets pretty warm in the summer.  We never got one for DD, but since DS will be a June baby, it seems more important. Does anyone know if an non-ceiling fan also helps prevent SIDS?  Would a tower fan or normal oscillating stand fan be just as good?  I'm looking for something to help with air circulation without creating a draft. Does anyone like a specific fan model? TIA!

  • I think any fan would work. As long as their is circulation in the room.

  • I have a really nice tower fan that I bought from Target last year. It's pretty quiet, has multiple settings and has a digital thermometer so you know the room temp. I want to say it's a Honeywell, but I could be mistaken. It was around 60 and worth every cent!

  • Dd has never had a fan in her room, but we have central ac, so if you've got that then you're fine.

Actually, doctors recommend having an actual fan in the room to keep air circulating. I don't believe just having central air suffices.

Negative. I've read the study and all that matters is that air is circulating. Central air does the same job.

OP, a small fan blowing toward the ceiling would be fine. Don't blow a fan directly on the baby.

I have a tower fan in DD's room.  I've had it in there since she was about 3 months old (she roomed with us for the first 3 months).  It also helps drown out some of the apartment noise, too. We also have central air, but I like the bit of background noise.

  • Thanks, everyone! I'll check out the one at Target next time I go.  We have AC but it's still warm upstairs.  Of course, I'm always warm now :)

  • If you have an Ocean State Job Lot near you, they have a lot of fans in stock right now for a lot less than $60.

I'm just going by what I was told by my doctor. To each their own I suppose.

It's not to each their own if it's science.

If my doctor told me to have a fan in the room regardless of what type of air conditioning I have, I'm going to listen to her. If I don't, and god forbid something happens to my child, I will not have to wonder "what if I had just put a fan into the room?" If you or anyone else doesn't want to do that, then don't. Don't judge me for using a fan and I won't judge you for not using one. I'm going to err on the side of caution when it comes to my babies health.

  • Any fan will do.

Uh we use fans. There's one on in my son's room at this very moment. I must've edited the judgy parts out of my reply when I wasn't paying attention.
