Follow up after interview

I interviewed two weeks ago for a great job and was told they'd call me in a few days.  I got an email a few days later saying the office had gotten really busy and they hadn't yet had time to discuss the candidates and would try to get back to me by the end of the week.  It's been almost a whole extra week and I haven't gotten a call or another email that they're still busy, it's taking longer than expected or whatever the case may be.  Do I keep waiting or is it okay to send an email or call just to touch base?  If I do email/call, how do I word it?  I don't want to come off as impatient or rude.  Maybe I'm over-thinking this, but I would love this job and the anticipation is killing me!  Thanks!

I think it's ok to send a follow up email.

Along the lines of: I'm writing to follow up on 'x' position.  I'm very excited about the opportunity and feel I would be a great fit for your company. Has a decision been made in the candidacy process?

This is perfect.  It's exactly what I would do.  Except if I had never sent a Thank You note.  Then I'd send a note with the essentially the same information but with a couple of sentences thanking them for the interview, too.

Thank you so much, that sounds great!  I did send a thank you note, so I'll email them.  Thanks again, and hopefully I get good news back :)
