Trying to Get Pregnant

Low T (+ intro)

A bit of background first: DH and I have been married a little over a year, we were planning on starting to TTC in six months or so.  BCP didn't especially agree with me, so I've been charting and we use condoms during my fertile window.

DH hadn't been to the doc in years, he found out they were going to take him off their books, so he went in for a routine physical.  They did bloodwork, and are concerned with his testosterone levels.  The doctor said it could affect his sperm count, either already or somewhere down the road.  DH is only 26, and doesn't seem to have any of the typical symptoms (at least that I've noticed).

I guess what I'm looking for is 1. if anyone else has dealt with this, and 2. reminders that worrying before we even start trying is ridiculous.    Thanks, and here is a cookie ice cream sandwich:

My DH was diagnosed with Low T as well a few years ago. He was being treated for it, but then it interfered with one of his other medications so he stopped. I know it CAN effect his fertility, but it is not something we are choosing to worry about unless we get to the one year mark without getting KU.  We are just going to try on our own for now and hope for the best. That is basically all you can do.

I do recommend sticking to EOD sex though rather than trying for every day, even during your FW. From what I have read EOD is ideal for men with low T.

  • Hello and welcome. My DH has not been tested, but has had side effects of possible low T for the last few years. Tired, Irritable, No interest in sex(sucks!). He is 33. He went to GNC and got a testosterone boosting supplement to help called Nugenix. He started it 3 weeks ago and can already feel a difference in his mood and sex drive (YEAH!). Even trying something like this might be a thought to discuss with the Dr. We are only on 2nd cycle. Even if you are not TTC yet, anything to put you both in good health is worth trying.

  • My dh was also diagnosed with low T. It does effect his sperm count. His highest count was 6 mil and lowest was less than 1 mil without treatment. He was put on clomid daily 25mg and that raised his count drastically. But it takes 23 months to see a difference. It also doesn't work for every person. His sperm count with clomid is usually over 100 mil. We did get pg from an IUI and our currently trying for a second.

Also be careful about some low T treatments because they aren't TTC friendly.

I would have a SA done now. Just to make sure you actually have a chance of getting pg. SA is a simple test. We didn't have one done till after TTC for 1 and a half years so we wasted a lot of time. Good luck!

ETA: my dh also didn't have any signs of low T. He has plenty of energy and a high sex drive

  • Thanks for posting about this. My husband is almost 30 and has low testosterone. He had an SA done when he was in college to be a donor, and everything was awesome then. However, I am concerned too that there could be an issue (he's doing testosterone shots right now). We've only been TTC for 9 months but I just got him to make an appt for an SA since it could've a legitimate issue before we hit the one year mark.

I know this doesn't necessarily help you but wanted to welcome you and relate. :)

  • Hubby and I found out back in dec that we were pregnant first try. A few days later he got his tests back from the Dr. I had him ask if he should do anything just in case. Never thought we would get pregnant so quick. At the time I was 38 hubby 40. Test came back for him low T. He went to the specialist and she did blood work, ended up having him get an MRI wanted to check to see if he pituitary glad was ok. All was ok.

Dr told him since we are TTC again I MC in feb that she does not want to put him on any supplements since that can lower your chances of conceiving.

Once we are pregnant and in the clear hubby will then start supplements.

Not sure if this helps. PM me if any other questions.

  • Thanks ladies!  The doctor is running a few more tests, then we'll find out about treatment options.  I appreciate the input and encouragement!
