Help with name

Okay, so we are having a boy.  I really like the name James and it is also my father's name (he goes by Jim).  I have always wanted to name my son James, but with no nickname.  I don't see why James would need to be shortened being that it is only one syllable.  The problem is that my sister named her girl Jaime and said it was after my Dad (he doesn't go by Jaime, but whatever).  Sometimes she will call her James.  I think it might get confusing if  I use James for our boy.  What are your opinions?  I'm having a hard time finding a name I like as much.

Re: Help with name

  • I think it would be fine but I would talk to her about it if it bothers you because she calls her daughter James sometimes. Jaime and James are two different names and the children will be two different genders.

  • If you sister had a son named James would you still be considering using the name? If so, then use it. In my family this would be really weird but everyone is different. I grew up very close with my cousins and I think it would have been strange if any of us had the same name... like if there were a Joseph and a Josephine but they were both called Joey. I think in each generation there is usually only one namesake and generally that is the same gender as the individual you are honoring.

If you still decide to use it I would talk to your sister first. I understand it seems petty but she will probably be offended by this. You can also talk to your dad and see what he thinks.

Are you ever going to call your James "Jamie" just as a nickname? Will the kids be around each other a lot? Could you use James as a middle name instead?

James is a great name though!! :)

My niece never goes by James in school or by anyone else, just sometimes my sister will be like, "Hey James look at this", etc.  But other than my sister occasionally calling her that, everyone usually calls her Jaime.

  • I would use the name James (I love it, by the way). What a nice honor for your dad that both of his daughters wanted to name a child after him.

  • I personally wouldn't use James if this was my family.  I see my sister and niece all the time and it would be really strange to me...also my sister would make a huge deal out of it.

If you don't see her a ton and the last name is different it may not be a big deal...just up to you if you want to deal with any fallout from your sister.

  • I'd go for it despite your niece's name.  They're not really the same name, but they are obv similar.  Unless you see your sis's fam all the time and/or it will cause a major rift, I think your choice for your child's name trumps other concerns.  BUT I do think other ppl will inevitably shorten James to Jim/Jimmy.  I don't mind those nn but if you do, you might want to slide it into the middle position.

  • Two of my aunts (they're sisters) both name a child Joseph, nn Joe. It's not that weird to me since they have different last names, and I have so many cousins anyway.
