Toddlers: 12 - 24 Months

traveling

Hi all!

I am planning our first family vacation for September to florida. My son will be 14 months old. Any tips on flying and traveling with a young toddler? What to bring on the plane? Do I check the stroller?

Thanks!

Re: traveling

  • There's a travel thread in Working moms but it's for traveling w/2 kids.

I travel fairly often w/the kids and husband.  We do fine.  It's tiring for sure but just take a bunch of stuff to entertain the baby on the plane, like a tablet, mini dvd player, etc.  My DD#2 is 15 months and she won't really color or play quietly on a plane but she will watch some parts of movies and play some apps on a tablet.  We're hoping this will keep her mostly entertained, but we know we'll have to walk around the plan a bit.  My 2.5 yr old will behave just fine.

As far as what to take, if I only had one kid I would bring her car seat and check it in immediately w/the baggage- it's free.  I would also check the stroller with only one 15 month old, or gate check it so you can take it all the way before you board the plane- also free.  I would take a basic umbrella stroller.

That's about it.  Also take snacks and water and stuff.

  • Yep, take a variety of a lot of different things you know your son likes, including apps on your phone, small toys, lovies, snacks, etc. I liked having my full-size stroller to put things underneath as we walked through the airport, then gate-checked it for free--most if not all airlines do this. I wouldn't check the stroller before you walk through the airport unless its a very small airport because you don't want to have to try to carry or chase him while you wait the whole time.
