lumpy head???

so i'm a pretty paranoid person and i know that the stuff i tend to stress out about ends up being nothing...but every now and again i get a nagging feeling that i just need to ask someone (i.e. the bump) if my concerns are legitimate or not, so here goes:

my dd who is 13 months (12 adjusted...she's a twin) likes to fall back, and usually she lands on something soft, like her crib mattress, play mat, etc.  however every once in a while she'll be downstairs on our rug (on the part that the play mat doesn't cover) that thinly covers our stone tile floors, so it's pretty hard.  and fyi, she has fallen on that hard part before, cried, and got over it.  well on sunday she was playing on the ground near her crib when she fell back, and her head hit the corner of the crib that juts out.  there was a crack/smack sound, i'm assuming (hoping) from the crib, and she cried and got over it.  then on monday while playing with a ball she fell backward and of course hit her head (i don't know how hard b/c i didn't see her go down...just saw her on the ground) on the thin rug over the stone floor...the really hard part.  she cried pretty hard, but then again, got over it.  as i was soothing her and patting her head, i could feel a couple of hard lumps on her head (which i believe were there before the two falls...she was born with a flattish head (torticollis)) but more concerning was that there was a sort of indentation (barely noticeable) on the back of her head too...and it's still there.  so i guess my question is, is a lumpy head (my ds's head is smooth all around) normal at 13 months or could the lumps and possible indentation be from her falls?  things like concussion or skull fracture are running through my head....are those things possible from a falling backward?

please calm me down...and feel free to call me crazy if you think i'm totally overreacting!  :)

Thanks!

Re: lumpy head???

  • I know DS has bumps all over his head from falls.  I am not sure he has an indentation anywhere but he also has lots of hair.  I think you are fine.  I ask pedi at 12 month appt how often he can fall b/c it seems he falls all the time but unfortunately I think it is fine and their heads are still soft but call the pedi if you are losing sleep.
