Everyone using convertible?

Has everyone switched to the convertible carseat? DS still uses the infant carrier carseat since he's on the small side and doesn't mind being in it still. For those that have switched, what reasons caused you to switch? I think a big reason we haven't switched is because we only have one right now and need to purchase the second one.

Re: Everyone using convertible?

  • LO is still way under the weight limit of the infant seat, but he's over the length. Be sure to check the length limit on yours! We switched to the convertible seats a few weeks back. He loves them because he can see out more.

We are still using the infant seat because he still fits fine, and we only have one convertible seat so far. We would need one for DH's truck and on for my mom's car.

I switched over when DS was 3 months...it was just easier to use.
  • We've used a convertible from the beginning. I was afraid DS would be a big baby and the infant seat would be uncomfortable and he'd outgrow it quickly. Naturally he's a tiny little thing, lol. But it's worked well for us nonetheless.
  • We switched at 4 months because DS screamed the whole time he was in the car. He was fine in the seat snapped into the stroller, but just got so upset in the car. We hoped he would be more comfortable in the convertible. Now he sleeps in the car like a normal baby.

  • We just switched 2 weeks ago. Not only was he getting close to the weight limit but with LO coming today we needed the infant carrier for him and not James. James loves the convertible better though because he can see better.

  • I switched at about 6 or 7 months because I am pretty short, 5', and I have a larger SUV and I couldn't get DD in the car as easily as before as she got bigger.

  • We switched around Christmas time because dd would scream bloody murder in her infant car seat! She hated that thing from day 1!

  • We haven't switched yet, mainly because we have yet to purchase the convertible ones.  My boys are on the smaller side too, but are quickly approaching the length limit.  Plus they're getting too heavy for me to lift the car seats in n out of the car....way too heavy.

  • It was getting too hard to get DS in his seat. He looked "crammed" in, so we bit the bullet and got a new one.

NOTE: if you can get it on amazon, they are an average of $50-$100 cheaper than in the baby stores. Plus if you have Amazon Prime/Mom it is delivered in 2 days for free. I love Amazon!

  • We switched a few months ago because we hated the bucket seat lol I wear DS so much I wished we had just went with a convertable seat to start with, ours has an infant insert.
  • We're still using the infant seat but it's just because it's easier for DC - I can leave it and if H or my mom picks up the kids they can grab it and go.  Other than that we don't take it out of the car anymore though.  She's a tiny thing and no where near the limits.  (DS hit the height limit at 8ish months but even now at 2.5y hasn't hit the 32lb weight limit lol!)

This was one of our reasons too. We switched at 7 months. He also started to get really heavy to very in it.
He was sitting up great and starting to be mobile so we switched. He loves his new seat and no more screaming while driving! I guess he was just uncomfortable!

  • Why are some of you using the convertible vs the booster?

Boosters are meant for much older kids. The bare minimum recommendation is 40 lbs and 4 years. Even at that age/weight a five point harness is probably safer for most kids.

Convertible carseats can be RFing or FFing. Boosters even the 5-pt harness ones like the Graco Nautilus or Britax Frontier are FFing only.  The Britax Frontier is for 25lbs or more as a 5pt harness carseat.

DS3 has been in his britax marathon 70 since he was 6 mths. He likes it a lot better since he can see his brothers better. None of my boys likes the infant seat.

  • We're still using the infant seat. DD is about 22 pounds, and her feet are just now starting to reach out of the seat. We'll probably switch in a month or so.

Uh-oh :( Did I goof by getting the booster seat?  DH and I thought we'd transition from the infant seat to the booster seat. We have the Graco travel system with infant car seat and then the Graco Argos Booster seat.... Looks like I will be doing some reasearch LOL.......

I believe (from a quick Google search) that the Argos is a 3-in-1 seat, so it can be used as a car seat then a booster, but it can not be installed RF as a car seat. The current recommendation from the American Academy of Pediatrics is that all children ride rear-facing until at least 2 years of age. You may want to check out the forums on car-seat.org or go to the Nurseries and Baby Gear board for recommendations on a good convertible you can use until baby is old enough, tall enough, and mature enough to use a booster. If you can, I'd exchange the Argos.

  • We switched around February or so b/c she was out growing the height limit.  She liked either car seat so it hasn't bothered her but I think she knows she's a big girl sitting in her new one!
  • We switched around 6 months. She does fine in the convertible.

  • I only switched about a month ago because DS reached the height limit on the infant seat.

Otherwise I would have kept him in as long as possible. I loved being able to just lift him out if he fell asleep in there.
