It never gets any easier

We had Trevor's transition meeting earlier this week. He made great strides this year in his new school - up 6 reading levels in 6 months and on grade level for math.  The sped teacher said that they were concerned he could not learn due to the terrible reports from our previous school! Much support was needed in order for him to be out in the mainstream though, and it looks like he will be placed in a substantially separate program for next year that will be heavy on social skills while giving him a small learning environment. I know this is best for him, but is just never gets easier to hear about how your child just is not typical. Have been feeling down ever since even though I know there is so much positive news.

No real point here. Just a bit down.

I'm sorry you're feeling down about this. Being where he gets the support and differentiated instruction to thrive going forward will prepare him for success in the mainstream later when it matters more. By the time a kid hits high school, nobody remembers where they were placed for 3rd grade.

One of DS's former class mates was in a self contained ASD class for 7 years, but he kicked butt in secondary grades and he's headed to Brown next year. 

Thanks Auntie. This year is the first year he received the services he has needed all along. Our former district refused to recognize the ASD piece.   We will be observing the separate classroom next week.

Hopefully these therapies will really allow him to thrive and his skills will explode. I'm sorry it was so tough to digest. Those days are brutal.
