Q about Ergo's

Hi Ladies!!!

I am coming from 3rd tri to ask this. I am looking into getting an Ergo. I originally wanted the sport, because it says it's light weight, breathable, and fits most body types. I am a larger girl, (size 14-16) and wanted to get something DH and I both can use with no issue. I went on the hunt today in search for an Ergo sport and several stores I went to, didn't even carry Ergos in the first place. I made my way to target as my last stop, and low and behold they had one!! It wasn't the sport, it was the original. I looked at it, tried it on (and it even fits with my very pregnant belly) so I know it will fit once I have baby. I really liked it, but didn't buy it because I thought I had my heart set on the Sport. I found the sport online on sale for $97.

I like the original because of the extra little zip pockets to store something small. From what I read, the sport doesn't have any extra zipper pockets, however; I really like the fact that the hood detaches from the sport and the fact it will allow more breathability.

I am clearly having a summer baby, and I live where it gets really hot. 115 degrees in the summer. I won't be out walking in that weather with my brand new baby, and I will have to use the infant insert anyway- and I more so will use this carrier when I grocery shop, or go to the mall, or the dr. or something, until it cools off where I can walk outside and be comfortable in the weather with baby.

I am torn between the two carriers, and wanted some opinions from you ladies if you have the original, or the sport. What do you ladies think is the better one?

I have looked online, and really find no difference in the two except the few features that are different, and the sport is lighter then the original.

TIA

Re: Q about Ergo's

  • We have the sport and really like it, but I don't have anything to compare it to. I don't think you can go wrong between the two. I will say I hated using the insert with DS1 so I haven't bothered using the Ergo with this baby yet (I've been using a K'tan). I'll use it again when he's a little bigger.

I have this one, which is not the sport:

I'm also a plus size gal (large busted + a size 18), and I had the same concerns as you - rest assured, it fits fine.  I don't really like it with my baby though.  Even wiht my infant insert, it just feels... not very stable.  That is probably just my opinion.  So I also have the Bjorn sport, and I LOVE IT. It seems SO much more secure to me, and it is way easier to put on.. and I think it is more comfortable. I took LO to a baseball game last weekend wearing it and was comfy for hours. That is just my two cents.  I know that there is some controversy about the Bjorn and perhaps hip issues for babies, but I am choosing not to worry about this for  now.  Once he is a little older and "sturdier" I might switch to the ergo but for now, I like the Bjorn WAY better.

  • For a brand new baby, the Ergo works well with the infant insert (I used ours until about 12 weeks). But in the summer that would be WAY too hot, unless the A/C is up really high. Right now, I wear the Ergo all the time, and we both end up sweaty just doing shopping.

I'd probably look at the KTan or KTan Breeze maybe or a Moby or Boba wrap. I couldn't get a good fit with the KTan or the KTan Breeze, so I have a stretchy Boba wrap. Definitely not as hot as an Ergo with the infant insert.

I don't know where you found the sale on the Ergo Sport. I'd just be careful because there are a LOT of counterfeit Ergos out there (including ones from Amazon that are sold by retailers other than Amazon).

I found it on Amazon- it's sold by amazon and not a retailer. I am assuming it's authentic. I didn't know they did counterfeit ergos on amazon.

do you have the original or the sport? which one do you have?

I Have The Regular One And Love It. It Can Get Hot, But Not Because Of The Carrier, But Because Of Baby. I Fix That By Putting A Flannel Receiving Bkanket Between Me And Baby. Works Great.

I have the 'performance' one, which I think is different than the 'sport'. It's also supposed to be less hot, and has a zipper pocket for my stuff as well as one to tuck away the hood (I don't like how the hood always hangs out on the original). We have the infant insert and both DS and I didn't like it... Too hot and not really comfy for him. As of 8 weeks he was over 12 pounds so we started using it without, he just sits on the cushion that comes with the insert (I know it says to se it until 14lbs, but he just plain wouldn't fit in it anymore and was so uncomfortable). His feet don't yet stick out the side, he froggies them up inside. He likes the ergo WAY more than the moby, and currently hates his bassinet stroller as he can't see out the sides and he's such a curious guy (he can't use a normal stroller until he can hold his head up better, although he's pretty good).

Long story short, I can't help with original vs sport, but I really like the performance one.

I will take a closer look into the performance. I really like the fact of having a zip pocket or two on the carrier, for a short trip into the store, a walk, ect to store keys, debit card, id card, or even a binky. I really wish the sport had a pocket, it would be perfect! I need something that is lighter weight also- more breathable too.

I think the reason why I didn't like the performance was because of the belly pad. It's got a curve to it, vs the other ones are flat.

I will look at it again! Thanks so much!!
