Another reflux post - formula?

Last night DH and I took LO to the hospital. We were scared something was seriously wrong with her after a day of unconsolable crying. Turns out she has acid reflux. She's been given a prescription for Zantac, which I've seen works for some and not for others.

My question is, for those with LOs that have/had reflux and formula feed, did you find that changing formula helped alleviate the reflux? And if so, which did you find to be the best? I'm thinking of trying the Zantac for a few days to see if it helps without changing the formula, then trying another formula to see if that will help as well if she's still having serious problems.

  • How do they determine if its reflux or not?

  • We did not change her formula and the Zantac helped a great deal. The thing that did help us was letting her sleep in her swing to keep her slightly inclined. Give the Zantac sometime. I would not go switching her formula bc it could upset her stomach/cause gas/cause more spitting up which could irritate the reflux further. Formula is not the cause for reflux, its an immature digestive system.

What kind of formula are you using? We use Similac Advance. Changing formula would prob do more harm than good. It is so hard on their systems to keep changing formula. LO is on prilosec and it took a week or so to start working as the esophagus needs a few days to heal after the stomach acid stops coming up. LO used to also have bad gas for up to about 6 weeks due to her inmature digestive system....so you could experience this as well, but know it will pass.

From the symptoms she's been having, like choking, crying and arching her back when she eats, and making a gurgling sound when she breathes after feeding,

  • You could try changing LOs formula. Maybe Gerber Soothe or Gentle? Or Similac/Enfamil Sensitive?
