Cloth Diapering

Tips for CDing on the go?

Hello,

We just started CDing our 10weekold son. We're using a mix of BG Freetimes GroVia AIOs. So far, we've been keeping him in cloth at home still using disposables when we go out...any tips for successfully/easily using cloth when out about? I have a mediumsized Planet Wise wetbag for my diaper bag. At home we rinse the diapers with a sprayer right after changing even though he's EBF, I feel better about rinsing right away. Would I just not rinse if I change him when we're out? Also, how many CDs do you bring out with you? Obviously depends how long you'll be outbut I always just keep like 5 disposables with me, just in case. My son is not one of those magical unicorn babies who poops once a week, haha.

Any all practical advice welcome...thanks!

I never sprayed when my daughter was EBF.

When she was little I usually put 2 outfits and 3 diapers in my diaper bag.  If it was a really quick run to the store maybe 1 or 2.

For longer weekend trips or day trips, I usually pack a couple emergency disposables in the diaper bag.  But I only reach for them if I run out of cloth.

I don't spray the diapers while I'm out.  However, now that my daughter is older, I would drop anything plopable into the toilet before bagging a cloth diaper.  It's just easier to deal with.

Nope.  I look completely illiterate in most of my posts because I use a lot (too many) parens, hyphens, semi-colons, etc.  All symbols are no more.  It's annoying as sh!t.

In terms of CDing "on the go", I never did anything different than a sposie mama except throw the dirties in a wetbag instead of the garbage.  I never sprayed EBF poo.  It might stain but it will sun out.  Once he was onto solids and it had to be sprayed, I just did that once we got home.

IMO pretty much everything about CD'ing is more intellectually intimidating that the actual practice turns out to be.

This, once you make the jump, it's seriously not difficult.

The worst part about changing a cloth diaper on the go, is trying to figure out where to put the dirt one while your trying to put the clean one on your kid.

Seriously, there's no room on those changing tables.

  • We take a few prestuffed pockets with us, along with some dry cloth wipes (we always have water bottles with us, so wetting them isn't an issue) in the diaper bag. We just roll up and snap close the dirty diaper and then empty it out and process it as needed when we get home. It doesn't feel like any extra work than using disposables when out.

Do you plan on going back to work? Think of this as a trial run for packing the daily diaper bag for daycare. If your get all the kinks out of the system now, you'll be more confident in explaining how it works to the daycare staff.

I agree with all that's been said above.  A few other things I've learned:

1.) I like AI2s or prefolds tri-folded in a cover for out and about.  Then all I have to bring for a 2-4 hour trip is one extra cover and 2-3 prefolds/AI2 inserts.  Much smaller in the diaper bag than 2-3 pockets/AIOs.

2.) I always keep a small package of disposable wipes in the diaper bag.  That way if I have to do a change in the back of the car I don't have to find water to wet a cloth wipe.  The other option would be to pre-wet cloth wipes and store in a Ziploc bag or small wetbag.  I'm just not that good at thinking ahead or remembering to remove the wetbag once home.

3.) Buy a separate "diaper bag only" wetbag and always store it in your diaper bag except when washing.  Otherwise I kept forgetting to put a wetbag in the diaper bag & I'd have to scrounge up a Ziploc for my dirty diapers.

4.) Pack your "cutest" prints for out and about.  You never know who will see them and ask about CD'ing.  You just might convert someone!  Ok, so I'm sort of kidding, but really who hasn't saved their cutest prints to use when you know someone might see!

That's just...yeah. Frustrating. & poor website design. Oh well.

Yeah I think the need to spray is just my OCD tendencies at work. I should probably get over it. Although I was told that spraying can count as the "cold" cycle, thus cutting down on laundering time...

I imagine this is true : ) Thanks!

  • I got a Planetwise wet/dry bag that I put everything in.  Plenty of cloth wipes, a travel spray bottle with water&touch of soap, hand sanitizer, a changing pad, and 2-5 BG 4.0 or Freetime(all we have for now) depending on how long we are gone.  When we were gone a REALLY long day, I brought my Planetwise hanging bag and brought every diaper I own for both kids.  I would just put a few in the smaller bag before we went in anywhere, and then dump the dirty ones in the hanging bag when I ran out of room.  That was overkill, but we were an hour and a half from home, and I didn't want to run out.  FWIW, I have had toddler and EBF poo on my BGs, haven't sprayed, and haven't had any staining.

I'll be going back to work part-time, but my "daycare staff" is going to be my mom, at least at first, & I'm still working on getting her adjusted to the idea of cloth diapering. But your point is still a good one--if I'm not 110% comfortable with using cloth in any situation, I can't expect her to be.

I am SURE I will do this, haha. He only wears his cutest outfits out & about already, so CDs will just add to the adorable : )

I would not do this, fyi. The agitation against other diapers gets a lot more of the pee/poop out of the water than spraying ever could. If you are skipping a cold prewash, I would stop doing that.

Plus, the time that you are wasting spraying diapers is much more than the time it would take to start a rinse or prewash cycle before walking away.

Blueberry coveralls and GMD prefolds, but if your baby is ebf, expect poo to get on the cover if you're only going to trifold. I recommend a jellyroll or bikini twist and snappi. Both are easy folds that keep poo off your covers.

  • Also, I bring 1 prefold for every 2 hours I'll be gone plus 1 extra. I'll also bring 3 wipes for every diaper I bring. Then, I have the peri bottle from the hospital filled with water to wet the wipes. I keep a Grovia Magic Stick in my diaper bag because it keeps my hands clean. At home I use Grandma El's though. I was intimidated to use cloth out, but once I made the transition, it was easier because we stopped having blowouts like we did with disposables.

I can't believe TJ1979 hasn't chimed in on this one yet. Best Bottoms are a really good AI2 option. I also like Sweet Pea or Blueberry Coverall covers with prefolds. I agree with Danni too, that using a snappi with jellyroll/angelwing is a good option for containing NB poo.

  • For AI2 suggestions, I agree with PP: Best Bottoms. I babysit my niece and love hers, esp when I have to change her when we are at the park. Super duper easy and doesn't take up much room in her diaper bag.

Wow, I just glanced quickly but Best Bottoms look like a great, easy option. Do you have a preference for the microfiber vs. the cotton inserts? Do these work well overnight also? Such a complete n00b here!

So do you think this practice will lead to a buildup issue, or...?

Spraying to replace a cold prewash was suggested at a CDing workshop I attended, but I think mostly as an alternate for CDers who have to use a laundromat...I'll probably go ahead do the prewash, whether or not I continue to spray.

When out I place a new diaper under the diaper she is wearing, then open and remove the cloth she has on and place in wet bag.  New diaper is already under her bum so she can't pee/poop all over and I don't need extra hands to get dirty one in wet bag.

I always have 3-4 diapers in diaper bag plus some emergency sposies (she is known to go through 3 diapers in one change due to poops. I leave a med size wet bag attached to the diaper bag but have a handful of large ziplocs in bottom of diaper bag for emergencies when I somehow forget the wetbag.

Just rinse when you get home.
