April 2011 Moms

can't win...anyone else?

anyone feel like we can't win with our parents/inlaws/grandparents!?

all we really aspire to is happy kids who sleep well and eat healthy...am i wrong?

DS1 naps like a champ and loves going to bed. he has never fought bedtime or naptime! we're very fortunate i know. he is great wtih routine and we stick to it pretty strictly...more for our benefit as it's nice to know we have the evenings to ourselves by 7pm!

but whenever he sleeps at my inlaws they push his bedtime to at least 8 and his naps until almost 2 when he's always in bed by noon (ish)

they always say...oh he was just having so much fun.....SO! if you tell him it's bed time he'll go. why push it?! he's our child! i know i know....grandparents have a bit of leeway with our rules but a routine is a routine! (we're not scheduled so he HAS to be asleep by 12 OR ELSE...but he likes to sleep by noon so it doesn't throw off the rest of the day)

my mom always seems to ask about his routines too...why don't you just let him play? he's fine...he's happy. i know!!!! but that's not the point. he's our kid and this is how we do things so deal with it

sorry i  might be being overdramatic but i needed to vent and hear that i'm not alone in dealing with family influences!

  • It's not just you, we've gotten a lot more lenient with the schedule now that she is older (plus with summer she'll stay up later).  But the rents/inlaws always want to push it further.

She goes down for a nap anywhere between 2 and 3 usually and is in bed between 9 and 9:30.  They are constantly trying to keep her up till 11 and either not put her down for a nap or wake her up after only 30 minutes.  They also try to wake her up early in the morning for no reason.  Don't they understand that no sleep = cranky toddler.

When she was younger her bedtime was 8 and they would bietch and whine about it.  MIL especially doesn't respect our schedule...and she is the one watching DD for 5 days in June so we can go on our anniversary trip...I am not looking forward to getting back on schedule after that.

LOL. Similar here. We see my family once a year at most, so they've met Nora once so far. We see DH's family regularly, but they've never kept Nora all day or overnight by themselves, so we haven't had this issue. (FTR, I wish we could see my family more. I love and miss them tons.)

For a long time, they'd give us a little bit of a hard time when we'd leave sooner than they would have liked to accommodate Nora's schedule, but we've gotten a bit more flexible and they've stopped making comments for the most part.

  • We live with my In laws so it's always an issue. Not so much with the schedule thing with us as it is with interfering with what I do and do not want to feed her, and discipline. I feel your frustration.

  • My family respects our routines/schedule with Giselle.  So when she stays with them, I don't have to worry about her not getting a nap or not going to bed on time.  However, my DH's does not respect our routines/schedules...this is why she is never left alone with them.
