Babies: 3 - 6 Months

starting on solids??

I am gonna start my baby on solids. (duh) I am not doing rice cereal or oatmeal. Rice because of arsenic break outs in rice, and Oatmeal because we are Irish and he can develop Celiacs. (just saying that is my choice so dont argue or tell me that is bad or wrong! because it makes no true difference! and yes i know to give them the same food for days so if he is allergic I will know what it is. ?)  so I have given him apple sauce, and i just kept feeding him till i feel like he had enough. I still Breast feed him! but once a day i give him a bit of solids! is that good? how much to give them and how do i ease in more foods and how fast should i do that?? pretty much what is the 411 on starting baby on solids.

  • Do 1 meal a day. He shouldn't be eating more than 2 oz per day right now. Introduce a new food every 3 days. Also, do it 1 hour after breastfeeding. He should still be getting all his nutrition from breast milk. In a month do 2 meals a day.

  • I have started to introduce solids to our daughter. Brown rice mixed with some breastmilk and she didn't seem to care for it. So, I started to give her a little bit of purees (1st foods and I chose to do veggies first). I wait about 5 days and then mix it in with the cereal. Her main diet is breastmilk at this point. I would just do 1 meal a day for now.

  • How old is your LO? I start solids with my kids at 6 months (actually my second one was later because she was uninterested at 6 months) and skip cereals entirely since they don't really add nutrition. I usually do one meal a day for a month or two, then add a second then a third and feed them an hour or two after nursing, so they're a bit hungry but not starving yet.

Also, why avoid oatmeal over concerns about Celiacs? Oatmeal is gluten free and I've never heard of a connection between eating oatmeal and developing Celiacs? Also, is Celiacs more common in those of Irish descent? I am of Irish descent and have never heard that, but will obviously watch my kids more closely for signs of Celiacs if that's the case.

  • That is what I thought about oatmeal, but that is what a friend of mine told me, according to her daughters doctor. The doc specializes in celiacs?? so idk!  I am Irish, and my husband too, (not fully of course)

It doesnt really matter, I am not gonna do oatmeal. I am fine with doing fruits and veggies! more nutrition any how!

my baby is 3m. but he is not sleeping through the night!!!! he wakes ever 2 hours still to eat!!! all day all night! so I am giving him maybe an oz! but he will now sleep for 5 hours strait!

  • You are an idiot. Giving a baby solids doesn't make them STTN. And in fact it's quite normal for a 3 month old to wake frequently to eat. A 3 month old is way too young for solids. Do some freaking research. Jfc.

    Also, !??!!!??!!!! Punctuation abuse much?

Well, I have a few friends who have celiac and substitute oat flour for wheat flour, so I think you got misleading information.

As far as sleeping, my 3 month old also wakes up to eat every few hours. That's normal at this age. Cereal digests more quickly, so it won't help your baby sleep through the night. The only thing that will get them sleeping is waiting for their bodies to be ready for it.
