TTC - Third Month's A Charm?

Hey everyone. My DH and I are TTC, and we are still new at this. This month will be try number 3 (May is the third month trying) for us, so I'm hoping for the best. Last month I convinced myself that I was pregnant because 1. my period was late 2. I had almost all symptoms and 3. I just "felt" like I was.

I heard in another post that my "late period" could possibly be a miscalculation of when I'm ovulating. Low and behold, AF showerd her face. I must have ovulated later than I thought. I want to be able to trust my body, but it really threw me off last month...

In order to avoid another situation like that, I recently purchased an ovulating test kit. I'm new at this, so want to gain as much information as I can about using these tests, and any stories you may have... I have a few apps, and my own calendar as well to keep track, but any other advice would be great. I just want to make sure I'm doing all that I can.

Also, I'd love to hear how you get through things month to month. Seeing the BFN is really a sad sight to see...  Thank you!

  • Read TCOYF - https://www.tcoyf.com/.

And remember, it can take a healthy couple up to a year to conceive.  It took me a year with my first and seven months with my second.

Fertility Friend is a great site. Even if you don't really temp or chart, there is a lot of good information on there.

Really, being on the TTGP board helped me get through things. They have the waiting to O and the 2ww check in so it was comforting to hear from other people in the same boat as me. BFNs suck, so I mostly just didn't test unless I felt I had a really good reason to. Good luck to you.

OPKs are great, but they only detect the hormone surge before ovulation and don't confirm that you did indeed ovulate (It is possible to have a surge and not ovulate).  If you really want to do all that you can, I recommend charting your BBT along with using OPKs.  The OPKs tell you that you might be ovulating soon and then the BBT confirms it.  Fertility Friend is a great (and free!) online tool for charting your BBT.  You can check it out by clicking on my ticker.  I don't currently temp because we are doing IF treatments, but I did temp for a year and a half.

ETA: Ovulation Apps are typically crap and I wouldn't waste my time with them.

OPKs and FF (fertility friend) are great to use.

I have an unreliable cycle due to PCOS. Sometimes it's 5 weeks, sometimes 6 weeks, and sometimes any time in between. So DH and I just DTD for 9 days every other day to make sure I cover the full week where I could ovulate. I've gotten pregnant on the first try twice doing this.  However, it is very normal for this not to be the case every time. Like PP said, it can take a healthy couple up to a year.

  • It can take a healthy couple with perfect timing 6 months to a year. BFN's do suck. I just lived my life until I got the positive. We went to Ireland and went out on lots of dates.

  • I know that temping would not work for me--I'm not consistent enough.  I had been using an iPhone app from September and we had been using that to focus on when to concentrate our efforts.  I got the OPKs and used them when I got home from work and discovered that I was ovulating (or at least getting the surge) several days after the app was saying I was (and we would not always be able to find time to DTD on work nights given the 2.5 hour commute each way).

Second month using the OPKs I was on a not-quite-out-of-town business trip (over 50 miles from home, so authorized a hotel room, but only about 30 from both of our workplaces).  So I got the two lines the second night of the trip and called DH and told him to come meet me for dinner.  Didn't think anything of it because that was the ONLY time we connected that month during the fertile time.

Little boy is due any minute now...
