NWM: HR people

QUESTION:

I am a salaried employee and I work 8hr days. The nurses at work are going on strike and I was just told that I will be required to work 10hr days since we will be so short staffed. Can HR really do this? I already kill myself trying to get my 40 hours done. This just doesn't seem right.

Re: NWM: HR people

  • This doesn't answer your question, but I thought that Nurses (at least in hospitals) are legally not allowed to strike because they are critical to patient care.  Where do you work and what job do you do?

Short answer is yes, barring any union or employment contract to the contrary, they can require this of you. Sorry to hear that it's come to that, though.

  • I work in Mass. Yes, nurses are allowed to strike; just have to give a 10 day notice. I work as a Nurse Practitioner.

  • Most salaried people I know work with the understanding that being a salaried employee, that pretty much means that the work the hours needed to get the job done, not just 8 hours and call it a day.  It is one of the downfalls of being a salaried employee, many work long hours with no OT.
