Babies: 3 - 6 Months

Rock n play sleeper users

When do you plan on transitioning to a crib? DD is 4.5 months old and can't sit up yet but it rolling all over the place and lifting her head to lean up when I'm holding her. I'm thinking we should probably be starting the move sooner rather than later. We never had this with DS because we didn't have the RnP then. Did you start the transition with naps?

Re: Rock n play sleeper users

  • We'll transition when she outgrows it (I think it goes up to 25lbs?), it becomes a safety issue because she's able to move around too much, or she's no longer sleeping comfortably.  Whatever comes first :)

I'm guessing we'll probably start with napping in the crib, but it will depend on the situation.  DS didn't start out sleeping in his crib and I'm pretty sure we started the transition with napping, but really it all kind of came together on its own.  He wasn't a good napper, but then he was, and right around the same time he just seemed to not be sleeping as comfortably in his original arrangements so we put him in the crib and he took to it just fine.  I think he was just ready for more space.  He was 6-7mo.

  • Our twins are almost 16 weeks (11 adjusted) and I'm thinking we need to transition very soon.  They aren't moving around yet, but I'm starting to feel like they would be more comfortable in their cribs as they seem pretty scrunched up in the RnP.  We've actually done cribs randomly here and there for the first half of the night and it's gone well.  Why we haven't been consistent and stuck with cribs is beyond me....

Naps in cribs don't work for us.  I know everyone says to start with that, but I find they fight naps in the cribs and don't seem to mind them at night -  maybe because they are more tired at night and don't care where they are?  Good luck whenever you do decide to do it, I won't be far behind you!

  • We used the Rock n play for night sleep with our last two babies but naps sorta happened all over the place so for us it was really just a matter of transitioning at night.  Cold turkey was our approach.  One night they slept in the rock 'n play and the next night it was the crib, or in the case of our latest, a pack 'n play.

We moved both in between 3-4 months, at the same time they started sleeping through the night more consistently.

Kelly, Mom to Christopher Shannon 9.27.06, Catherine Quinn 2.24.09, Trey Barton lost on 12.28.09, Therese Barton lost on 6.10.10, Joseph Sullivan 7.23.11, and our latest, Victoria Maren 11.15.12

Secondary infertility success with IVF, then two losses, one at 14 weeks and one at 10 weeks, then success with IUI and then just pure, crazy luck.  Expecting our fifth in May as the result of a FET.

  • We transitioned sort of on accident. I bought a merlin sleepsuit to help him transition out of the swaddle. But when I put him down in the RnP in the suit, it was clear he didn't have enough room and his legs and arms were almost straight up in the air, haha! So I walked him into his room, put him in the crib, and expected the battle to begin. But he fussed for about 30 seconds and went to sleep. We still do the swing for naps, because DS is not a good napper, and I'm not ready to compromise what little sleep he is already averaging during the day. We only use the suit for nighttime, as a cue that it's bedtime, so it's not a nap tool for us.

He did just fine, but I do largely think it has to do with the snugness of the suit and the fact that he's not rolling yet or moving a ton to wake himself.  We most likely will not do the crib for naps until we can use some sleep training techniques and hopefully DS has moved out of this 30 minute nap phase that has been going on for about a month.

  • We started transitioning about 2 weeks ago just because his feet were at the end and he was starting to try to sit up in it. We started doing naps in his crib to get him used to it but it's been hard... so he's kind of in between both right now.

  • I used the rock and play until 3 months. we loved it. we switched her to a crib after that. We had 1 hard week then she got used to it. I started with her afternoon nap then did night. I read on mommypolls.com that it was good to switch before 5 months so that was my goal.

We need to transition now as he seems so scrunched in there. I've tried twice, both times he'll go to sleep in the crib from about 7:30pm to almost midnight and he'll wake up pretty upset. I'll go in and pick him up, rock him back to sleep and lay him back down, after that he'll wake up every hour. I haven't gotten passed two additional wake ups...I always cave and put him back in the RNP because I'm too tired.

DH and I decided we have to just buck up and both of us suffer through it...however this weekend is not a good time to do it as we are busy busy busy....so we might start again Sunday night.

We are already putting him down in his crib for naps on the weekends, during the weekday he doesn't really nap at home because he is at d/c from 7:30am to 4:45pm. And he typically doesn't nap before he goes to bed between 6:45 and 8pm.

    Henry Cavill...You're welcome!
