Allergies

I have terrible seasonal allergies which, a few days ago, just started to become unbearable. My meds list from the dr says benedryl, Claritin etc are all considered "safe". Anyone ever taken any of these when pregnant? I'm nervous about taking anything!

Re: Allergies

  • I normally take Claritin-D, which is not approved for pregnancy. So, when I took the regular Claritin, it did absolutely nothing for my allergies.

Sinus washes are a godsend, though. That has been my #1 defense, pregnant or not.

  • Before pregnant, I took Zyrtec (not Zyrtec D). I asked my doctor about a month ago what is safe for me to take. He said Benadryl would be his recommendation because it has been around much longer than Zyrtec and more studies have been done on it.

So far, it has worked pretty well for me. But, I only take it at nite as it makes me completely drowsy.

  • I would trust what my doctor told me.

  • My allergies have been awful this spring. I've been taking benedryl before bed.  But by the afternoon the allergies are back full force.  Agh..

  • I would stick with what your doctor said but my dr said zyrtec is fine and I have been taking that along with saline (non medicated) nasal spray. Its not a cure but it has helped a lot.

  • I'm taking Claritin daily, a steroid nose spray, benedryl as needed at night, and saline sinus rinse.

Inflammation in your body is worse for the baby than antihistamines.

  • My dr suggested claritin, too.

  • The longer you delay taking an antihistamine, the longer it takes to get allergies under control. The recommendation is actually to start a few weeks before symptoms.

I waited a week and then took Claritin, wish I would have taken it sooner. I have also been using a netti pot twice a day.
  • Have you tried local honey?

DH didn't believe me and is shocked at how well it works. He said it works better than any med he's ever taken.

I have heard of this but have never tried it... where do you buy local honey? A farmers market?

  • My son and I have seasonal allergies and we take a dose of local honey daily. It certainly helps, but it still isn't enough. I recommend it, though.

Honey + nasal irrigation + med is the best combination for us.

  • Thank you all so much! I'm trying the Benadryl tonight fingers crossed it helps. I've also done the local honey or the last year but stopped recently because the texture was too hard to stomach! I choked it down tonight and will be doing so going forward!
