Strange baby behavior

After two pretty good weeks of establishing a bedtime routine, LO just started absolutely SCREAMING his head off tonight -- we've done everything, bottle, nursed, shushing, swaddling, rocking, bouncing... finaly DH put him in his swing with the white noise going, in the dark, and I'm sitting on the sofa in the dark watching him, and he's jus sitting there, wide awake, staring off into space.  Very very odd.  I realllllllllllllllllllllly want to put him to bed but I'm afraid that if I touch him, he'll freak out and scream his head off again and I seriously can't handle it.  Help.

Re: Strange baby behavior

  • I daresay it may be growth spurt behavior? My son is usually calm and only fussy/crying when he wants to eat or be held... now he is crying for no reason.. after I fed him, burp the crap out of him, changed him, and hold him while shushing him... he screams his head off. Sadly this has been going on for like four days now, where it is a habit of him screaming while I put him to sleep.. during naps or at night. Only thing that makes him stop is if I stand up and dance or rock him very vigorously or if my husband talks as loud as he can.

  • Growth spurt or overtired? We had a night like this last week. It was terrible. We kept taking his temp thinking he might have been sick since nothing we did would stop his crying. Then I realized that we had done a lot that day and he had only slept about two hours the whole day.
    Good luck!
  • Sounds pretty normal to me. Sometimes they just have wakeful fussy nights. It sucks, but it happens. Sorry, hope he sleeps eventually!

Thanks all. It was more the particular "tone" of screaming that was concerning, had never heard it before. But after lots of nursing we got him calmed down and then he slept for 4 hrs straight, so yay!

  • If it's unusual for him and he does it again tonight, I would consider having the doctor check his ears. With my son, that was frequently the cause of unusual night waking/crying/screaming.

For ear infections you mean?  Good tip!
