Baby Showers

Appropriate registry?

My mother and sister have said they are throwing me a shower for both my and DH's side of family and friends. I think they'll end up inviting approximately 70 people.

A couple girls at work have hinted at throwing me a shower, which perhaps 15 co-ed people would attend.. I don't think they'd really be buying stuff off my registry though. More just like taking me out to lunch. Maybe a couple people would check out my registry.

I'm just registering for things now at two places... What would be an appropriate number of gifts at both stores, and what price points should items be? I know it's not an exact science, but should most be under $20? Are a few things over $100 acceptable at both stores? Is there a "rule of thumb" ratio for price points to follow?

Any information would be greatly appreciated. TIA!!

Register for the things you want and need. Don't worry so much about the price points and quantity. While some people very well may shop off the registry, others won't. I use registries for personal use as a way to keep myself organized as to what I want/need.
this. A registry is for YOU to list what you need and want. Yes you want a variety of price points, but first comes what YOU need.

  • OK, thank you ladies! I was feeling weird about putting stuff over $100 on there.. Like my husband was embarrassed that I really want an organic mattress, when there's plenty way cheaper out there.. I tried to tell him that it doesn't mean anyone will buy it, and then we can get a completion discount at the end at least. Thanks again!

  • I had about 25 items on my target registry, and 55 items on my BRU. I had 40 women at my baby shower, and seriously almost all of the items were bought off my registry, except a few toys, toiletries and humidifier. I overheard a lot of women say that all of the "bigger price items were taken, so I bought a bunch of smaller priced items"

My advice- register for things you definitely need, and have most of the items in between 20-60$, most people buy around that price range.

Also, its a pet peeve of mine to see doubles on a registry. Don't do it, and save the hassle of returning items.

  • I'm only registering for the things I really need. I've got quite a few second hand items so I don't have to register for anything bug besides a highchair. My aunt told me that if I register for the same thing at 2 places that I'll end up with 2 of them so to not do that!

There is 5 things on my BRU registry, and about 20 on my Target registry because my aunt is also doing the "diaper door prize" thing at my shower so I don't want people to feel like they have to get something off of the registry too, I figured keeping it short and sweet would be a good way to do that!
  • In my experience coworkers often like to pool their money for a bigger gift. Go ahead and put bigger things on there if it is what you want, and see what happens.

i also felt uncomfortable registering for anything over $100. If there's something pricey that I need from that store, I'll add it after my shower to get the completion coupon.

  • Register for every single item that you may possibly need. For my first child I registered for over 150 items. It was everything from bottle brushes to the crib. I did this for my own personal record keeping not necessarily for the shower. It also helped with the competition codes. I kept track of what I had already purchased, received and what I still had to get.

Don't limit your registry to lower priced items. You may have a couple of friends or family members that may all go in together to get you a larger gift!

    Good luck!

Is this the diaper raffle? ::cringe:: Please try and talk your aunt out of it. Seriously. You are already on the right track trying to make it so people don't "have" to get you a second item. Just... put diapers on your registry and get rid of the "game" portion of bringing them. If people want to give you diapers, they will.

I tried, I personally hate it when people do that at showers. My aunt says its the best way to get a bunch of diapers, I tried my best to disagree and let her know that I've been stocking up on diapers when they're deeply on sale and I find coupons an through samples and such and that I could really use the items off of my registry instead but she's adamant about doing it.

I originally felt a little weird putting several pricy items on our registry, but it was stuff we either needed or really wanted that we figured we would buy with our completion coupon if no one else did. As it turns out, though, every single item over 50 dollars was purchased off of our registry, so I was glad that I put everything on there. So you might be surprised with that mattress, and if not, you can use your completion coupon to buy it yourself.
