This is probably a silly concern...

My LO has hiccups at least 3 times a day. I read online that it could mean that the umbilical cord is being compressed. I would rarely notice hiccups up until that past couple weeks- is there a reason I should be concerned?

I've also noticed that LO mainly gets them after I drink cold water- is there a correlation between the two?

Re: This is probably a silly concern...

  • I've been wondering the same thing lately. LO has been getting hiccups about 3 times a day and on Mother's Day he had them 5 times. I have read online that it can be good (they're practicing breathing) or bad (cord is compressed) but I have no idea what the real answer is...I have an OB appointment on Friday and I plan to ask then

On another note...is it just me or are hiccups freaking annoying?!

  • LO is drinking amniotic fluid all day; imagine if we were drinking fluid all day...we'd probably be hiccupping like crazy too. I wouldn't be concerned, mine gets them all the time too :)

Amen! I feel really bad, since they're supposed to be so cute. But his head is really low now, so it just feels like the weirdest spasms, right in the center of my pelvis.

    This.

  • My LO gets them always. So I read Dr google and found the same results you did and scared myself. Never a good idea! But there are a lot of other things that go along w the umbilical cord being wrapped around the neck. Decreased movement I remember as one. Just keep looking out for symptoms that go along w the hiccups. Hiccups alone I do not believe to be worrisome

My MW told me at my last appointment that hiccups are a sign of fetal well-being, because like another PP mentioned they are drinking all that amniotic fluid.
  • My son had the hiccups all of the time and he still has them now at 2. I don't think it has anything to do with an umbilical cord. This baby has them frequently too. At this stage of the game they practice breathing so I'm sure that can contribute to the frequency. When I was pregnant with my son and would have biophysical profiles done around this time they looked for practice breathing as thy said it was a good indicator of fetal well being.

  • I've never heard hiccups are caused by the umbilical cord being compressed. I have always heard, and read that hiccups are good because it shows a good well being, and they are practicing breathing. My baby has them all the time-

They said they don't know what cause the hiccups in babies, however they believe it has something to do with them swallowing amniotic fluid.

I will now have to ask my Dr. and see if she has ever heard about the cord being compressed. That kinda worries me now. Oye!!

FWIW, I'm a hospital prenatal nurse, and I have never heard the "hiccups = umbilical cord compression" theory. That sounds like a load of hooey to me. I watch babies on monitors all day at work, and there's a certain heart rate pattern that indicates cord compression -- it's called a variable deceleration, and I have never once seen it at the same time as fetal hiccups.

Not a nurse but I'm going to ditto this. I ended up in L&D the other night and actually asked the nurse because we were chatting and I remember someone else posting this not too long ago.  My baby gets the hiccups multiple times a day for weeks now.

My nurse said she's never heard that and that cord issues typically will show up in the form of fetal heart rate changes.

Thank you for your responses! This is great to know. It sounded sort of strange when I first read it, so I'm glad I asked before going into my next appointment!
