Mirena and migraines

At my 6 week postpartum check-up, my OB and I were discussing my birth control options. She doesn't feel comfortable with putting me on the pill since I get ocular migraines. She recommended Mirena since the hormones are localized, and not entering the bloodstream like the pill would. But I've read mixed reviews when it comes to Mirena and migraines. Anyone have any experience with this?

  • I don't have migraines, but I do have an IUD. If your OB is concerned about the release of hormones affecting your migraines but you still want an IUD, did she mention Paraguard? It is copper and hormone free, good for 10 years.

  • This isn't going to really answer your question, but I get migraines as well.  I decided not to go on any birth control options and we will use condoms until we are ready to try again.  Maybe that would be an option for you?  I don't want to mess with the hormones in my body!

I get ocular migraines and I'm currently not on any form of BC (we're using condoms), because we're going to try to get pregnant quickly enough that an IUD doesn't make sense, and I refuse to take hormones again

Just FYI I FULLY think that the pill and nuvaring made my frequency of migraines increase significantly.  I will never go on hormones again.

THere aren't a lot of people I know who get these kind of migraines.  I'm so sorry you get them too, but it is nice to have somebody out there who understands, too.
