When to buy baby carrier?

I already have a Moby Wrap, but am thinking that we will want to buy an Ergo or the like as well.

I have heard that everyone and their baby is different so it is hard to tell in advance what you would like.  Is this something that I should wait until after I give birth to determine which we like best?  Perhaps when we can test them out with out LO?

Or maybe I should just opt for one and see?

 Thanks!

I would just wait.  Use the Moby with your newborn and see if you and the baby like it.  You can't use the Ergo with a newborn unless you buy the insert separately so its a lot to spend if you aren't sure.  I have the Beco Gemini and love it but I used my K'tan with my son for the first 2 months until he was big enough for the Beco.

  • My friend recommended getting this instead of the Ergo.

Beco baby carrier (like the Ergo, but baby can face forward or towards you)

  • I would wait and try them out with your baby.  I had an Ergo and my kids hated facing in.  I bought a Beco and they love it because they can face out.

  • A moby will get you through the newborn months, so you could totally wait and see what you and baby will like once he's born. I ended up getting a sleepy wrap (now called a boba wrap), moby wrap and an ergo with an infant insert pre-baby and it all worked out. My baby liked being worn in a wrap with me, but not with my husband and he liked being worn in the ergo by my husband, but not with me lol.
  • Sometimes you can find an ergo on sale. I saw one at Marshall's 2 weeks ago and I know they go on sale on those deal a day baby websites. So if you find one for an awesome deal, I would get it. Otherwise, you can totally wait.
  • I would wait. I inherited a Bjorn from my sister and purchased a Maya wrap. I hated the Bjorn and my son hated the wrap, so I ended up giving the Bjorn back to my sister and selling the wrap on CL. We went to a baby boutique when he was 4 months old and tried the Ergo. We both loved it, so that's what we went with.

  • It's so hard to tell.  I have a K'Tan and an Ergo.  DS HATED the K'Tan when he was a newborn.  I tried him in it so many times and he tolerated it no more than 1/2 dozens times at most.  I was so afraid that he'd hate the Ergo too, but when I tried him in it when he was a little older (~ 3.5 months) he didn't mind it.  I won't say he love it, but he doesn't complain when I put him in the Ergo for walks.

  • Thanks Ladies!  I think that I will wait a bit so our LO can help us decide on what works best for us.
  • I'm 16 weeks and I already have a Moby, an Ergo, a woven wrap, and a friend is making me a ring sling, but they were all gifts or very very good prices.

You might want to check on local Meetup groups in your area. I know around here (Chicago burbs) we have a Babywearing Mamas meetup where you can test out carriers with your LO to see what you'll like best once he or she arrives. Stick with one or two basic carriers for now and then explore/borrow some others.

  • I have a moby wrap for when LO arrives next week. My DH used the bjorn for my DD and they both loved it but didn't sit right on me. He will continue using the bjorn for LO and I will use the moby.
  • I got two before DD arrived - Moby wrap (from SIL) and Boba (snagged it on ebay).  DD liked the moby fine but it's more work.  Every time I tried her in the boba she just screamed. :(  I just tried it once a week or two and then one time around 12 weeks or so, she was fine in it and has been ever since.  At ~ 6 weeks I stopped by BRU and picked up an Infantino Mei Tai carrier which she liked a lot.  I mostly reach for my boba now because the buckles are so easy.  The mei tai is super comfy though.  I actually want to get another one so I can keep one in each car in case we're out and I forget the boba. :)
