Babies: 6 - 9 Months

Tummy Sleeping

I'm in a predicament. My 6 month old reflux baby almost jumps out of his rock n play now. He's not getting any sleep and neither am I. We have tried transitioning him into his crib inclined (because I think he wants to stretch out) but he still refluxes and I can't get the crib high enough. For his nap today, I flattened he crib and put him on his tummy to sleep for the first time so I could supervise. He's sleeping like a champ! I have seen him move tummy to back a handful of times but he doesn't seem to like to do it and hasn't done it in a while. He sits great with his boppy for support and can push himself up on his arms no problem. Am I making a mistake laying him down this way? FTM here and worried.

Re: Tummy Sleeping

  • You will have to see how/if it effects his reflux to be on his tummy. But my DD has been a tummy sleeper since 5 months. She was having a really tough time transitioning from the swing to crib. On a whim I laid her down on her tummy one night and she hasn't slept on her back since that day - not once.

I was nervous for the first few nights, but she had great head and neck control even then. She could lift her whole torso up while on her stomach, so I wasn't nervous about her moving her head to the side.

I concur with the PP about how it effects the reflux.  My son has been a tummy sleeper for a quite awhile also.  As long as LO has good head control it should be ok.

  • I think if he has good head control, he'll be fine. As soon as DD could roll, she did, and sleeps on her tummy or side every night.

My DD started sleeping on her belly at 41/2 months maybe??  Hasn't slept on her back since.  I always lay her down on her back and before I can even leave the room she has rolled over.  Hopefully it means better sleep is coming your way!

+1.  DS2 loves sleeping on his tummy.

  • Thanks ladies. After being up every hour last night (waiting for new med dose to kick in) I am hoping this helps him.
