crib problems

My 11 day old son is having a hard time sleeping in his crib. For the first 4 days we were home he did great. Woke up every 2 to 3 hours for feeding and change and right back to sleep.
But for the last 4 nights he wakes up within 30 min of me putting him in there.
The only way I got sleep last night was letting him sleep on me for an hour then putting him in his crib. That only lasted 10 min.
Should I be putting him in during the day? I thought that crib should be for night time as to not confuse him..what are your thoughts/experiences?

Re: crib problems

  • My DS's sleeping habits were all over the place for the first few weeks.  In fact, at 10 weeks, they are only slightly predictable.  I learned to just go with the flow and try to get him to sleep as much as possible at night while taking good naps during the day.  I basically would put him anywhere he was willing to sleep in those first few weeks.  Hope you get some sleep soon!

  • I'm a believer in "do whatever you have to do to get sleep" in the beginning, so if the crib isn't working I'd try something else if you have another option.  Do you have a RnP?  Also, are you swaddling?

  • He loves being swaddled at night but hates it during the day. So that what we do. We have a bouncer and a swing that we can try. He sleeps really well in his car seat. Should I try those?

I'd try the swing.  Or start him in the crib each night and when he wakes, move him to the swing- that way if its a short phase he might start staying asleep in the crib.  We do the same thing with only swaddling at night which I think is a great thing because I feel like it clues her in that its time for extended sleep.

when my LO was brand new, we had the swing in our room. I would put him down in his crib every night, but like pp said,if he woke up right away we would put him in the swing.  Now he sleeps in his crib full time at night and sleeps 2-3 hours between feeding. White noise helps, too.

Me too. That's why all my babies have ended up sleeping with me. I can't function at all without sleep, and I can't get more than an hour at a time in the basinet. Right now we only swaddle at night to help distinguish days from nights. Eventually I'll start moving DD3 to the crib at the beginning of the night and bring her to bed with me when she wakes up.

Have you tried carrying her around in a baby carrier during day.  I've read that babies that get lots of close cuddle time during the day do better in their cribs at night as they don't feel the need to be held quite so much.  No idea if it's true and if it would work for your little one but might be worth trying.
