Days vs nights

It seems that my 16 day old has her days and nights confused. She has been sleeping steadily during the day, except for feeding. I have tried to keep her awake around bedtime, but no dice! During the night she is up every 45 mins. She sleeps in her own room, in her own crib. I wake up to her screaming. I check her diaper, breastfeed her until she falls asleep, burp her or keep her upright for 20 mins. Then I bring her back to her crib, lay her down and shut her door.

45 mins later, she's up! I'm getting very weary of this and feel like I just can't get her to sleep!!

What can I do to switch this around??

Re: Days vs nights

  • Sorry mama...do the best you can during the day to keep windows open, light coming in, music on, etc. Go outside and take walks to get fresh air. Wake every 3 hours to eat during the day so she doesn't have a long stretch during the day.

At night, keep things "all business" - feed, change, etc as much in the dark as possible with no talking and no extra cuddles and kisses.

It doesn't always work, but sometimes it will help.

  • They usually figure it out on their own by 6 weeks.
  • Does she sleep in the crib in her room for naps too?
  • No doubt it's a tough situation. You LO is very young, and with continuing to make sure you differentiate day and night and have a bedtime routine, she should switch it around. Every child is different, though, and some get adjusted quicker than others. Just keep faith that it will happen!

this exactly. OP, we were in the same boat when we first brought our son home, but this helped a lot.

She sleeps in her pack and play for naps during the day. The first week, she slept in her crib without any issues.
