I hate putting J in just a regular t-shirt... call me crazy, but I just don't like when her belly is showing/can show. I usually dress her in a onesie and shorts/pants, but is there a point when people think they should have switched to regular shirts?
Also, she is in day care, and I wonder if her day care providers get annoyed that she's still in onesies all the time!!!
Re: How old is too old for onesies?
This. I bought a few thinking they were cute before DD was born...she never wore them. I much prefer the look of a shirt. We have had to buy a size up for length, but we deal with it.
I still put him in them on occasion, but they are polo shirt style, not plain ones. I think part of the transition is just that there are fewer onesies available as they get bigger. I think we have maybe two now (size 24 month) that aren't specifically for undershirts or for sleeping. I had a few more in 18m, but that was really the transition time. Part of the reason I stopped buying them as much is that DS has a long torso, so he can wear shirts longer because he doesn't outgrow the length of the onesie. Does that make sense?
Going up a shirt size helps with length and hiding the belly/diaper.
I personally stopped liking onesies on DS around 10 months. We still have a few that we'll use if nothing else is clean, but I much prefer t-shirts for the convenience. I don't think babies are too old until 2 personally.
If I was your DC provider I'd probably get a little annoyed, but wouldn't say anything. If it was me I might leave her unbuttoned during the day until you picked her up tho

I used onesies as an undershirt for DS until he was about 14 months old. We live in Wisconsin, so onesies worked well for layering under regular shirts.
Then one day I picked up DS from daycare...... and as I was putting his jacket on, I began to smell a dirty diaper. To identify the kiddo with the dirty diaper, the teacher went around to a few kids, picked up their (regular) shirt, and "peeked" down the back of their diapers.
That's when I realized that I was requiring the teachers to get down and "whiff" my child's rear end, rather than just pulling out the back of his diaper. Out of respect for them, I never sent DS to daycare in a onesie again!

This made me smile!!!! Now if only I could put my husband and the dog in onesies so they would leave theirs alone.
With DS we stopped putting him in onesies around 10 months. With DD we stopped around a year. She still had one or two that she wore under jumper type outfits last winter. I've never liked the look of onesies and pants/shorts, so we switched them over as soon as we could.
Last summer DD wore mostly bubble or one-piece outfits, which I think are much cuter than onesies and shorts.
Yes, this. I have a couple that I use as undershirts, and I do find they work better under overalls. They're more for backup or play clothes, I just don't like the "look" of them at this age.

We use onesies still, as well as shirts, and rompers, etc. My DD is tiny and is just barely in 12 month size and i dont mind how a onesie looks with shorts, its too hot where we live for layering and im not a fan of the belly showing either.I will probably use onesies until potty training time and maybe longer.
My 3.5 year old is still in onesies. I don't care what people think. They aren't the ones who have to clean up the poop that she'd pull out of her pull-up with just a shirt on.
ETA: I am the same way about baby bellies. I like to have them covered.
Carters has onesies up to 24m, which still fit my 3.5 year old.
I know this may not be funny to you but thank you for sharing, this made me laugh so I hard and ona day like today I needed it lol
It is a temperature thing
when you live somewhere cold its all about the layers, and a layer that covers the tummy makes a big difference.
This! I live in New England and use plain white onesies as undershirts for DD except during the summer. I also don't like the exposed belly look.
The third time was the charm!

DS wore them this winter and last winter as undershirts (His outer shirt/jumper/coat can rise up, and no-one wants an exposed belly when it's -15 C outside).
I really don't like them though, they are a pain when changing diapers, and I love the ease of checking diapers when they are only in shirts, so no onesies for DS this summer or last summer, I really have no problem with the belly showing, the t-shirts he wears are long enough that it is never exposed by accident, only when he wants to show his belly button off, and lifts his shirt, I think it's cute.
DS wears onesies every now and then mostly because he hasn't outgrown them yet. I hate to see clothes go to waste, plus some of them are pretty cute.
I do admit now that he's a walker that I prefer shirts. I'm in NC, so there's not much worry with an exposed belly even in winter. He doesn't stay still long enough for me to snap a onesie shut unless I pin him on the changing table. Plus, like PP mentioned, shirts make it easier to check the diaper. I probably will be purchasing shirts for DS from now on.
To answer your question OP, I don't think there's a problem putting a toddler in a onesie. I actually have a memory of being in one when I was about 3, and nobody really noticed because I was wearing a skirt over it. I think you can continue to use them if you like the look, if it's still functional for you and your LO, or if you need it as an undergarment for colder areas.
