Traveling w/ Bugaboo Cameleon

Has anyone flown with a cameleon and gate checked it? We are taking a short 3 day trip and are debating if we should take the cameleon, buy the travel case for it or just buying a little stroller for trips. Does the airline charge if you gate check and it is in the carrying case? First time traveling with lo and wondering whats the best route. I would check the stroller at the ticket counter however I DESPISE Spirit airlines and thats what we're flying since thats what our friends booked.

I travel a lot alone with my son. I've tried with and without the stroller. Trust me when I say to take one! I don't rev taking the pricey one though. I've only flown SW and they still make me sign a damage waiver each time I hate check it. But the convenience of having it goes beyond the risk if it breaking. They did jack up his carseat this time which was a little scary but fixable thankfully. We bought a little click and go at BRU and I'll be using that from now on since our nice jogger was banged up pretty roughly as well. I want to limit the worry since I fly to see my husband every two weeks.
