Baby Names

Magnolia

An old friend of mine had her baby this morning and named her Magnolia.  They plan on calling her Nola.  Just curious what everyone's thoughts are :)

Re: Magnolia

  • Calling her Nola doesn't make sense to me, but other than that it's pretty cute.

That's what I would've done, too.  I like Maggie a lot more than Nola.

  • I really like Magnolia. Nola is just ok to me.

  • It's not bad! I like the nickname Maggie better.

It's not my style at all but it's pretty.
  • Absolutely ridiculous.  I know it gets tons of love on this board, but NO.  Azalea gets the same dislike for ridiculousness.  You'd get a total WTH side eye from every.single.person I know if you named your kid that.  It's a state tree - you wouldn't name your kid dogwood or redbud.
  • Not a fan of Magnolia, or a forced NN that doesn't seem to match the shortened version of the name. But hey, strokes and folks ;)
  • I like it, and I actually really like Nola as a nn.

Beautiful name.  Nola is a pretty nickname too, thought when I saw Magnolia in the title of the thread, I thought Maggie

I don't care for Nola  (it is all "place" name to me).

    Love Magnolia, though!

I LOVE the name. I had a childhood friend with this name and I always thought it was so pretty. She went by Maggie which I love. Nola does not sound pretty and though I love New Orleans I wouldn't nickname a child after it.

  • I could get behind it. It reminds me of Showboat, and the character Magnolia goes by Nola.

It's not anymore ridiculous than any other nature name... Violet, Rose, etc.

  • Don't care for the name or the nn.

  • Magnolia is a pretty well known neighborhood where I live (Seattle).  That sounds super bizarre to me, like naming a baby "New York" or something.  I usually like nature names otherwise.
    DD #1 Eva- April 2011
    DD #2 Violet- October 2013

  • We will be using it.. Haven't heard of any other ones though! Interesting! We will be using Maggie or MJ as a nn. I'm not sure about the nature name argument as an argument for ridiculousness though, as nature and floral names are pretty commonplace. To each their own though.
    Waiting for #3!

Magnolia is a GP name for me. I like it but don't think I'd ever use it. Nola is mns.

  • I think Magnolia is cute but the NN is NMS.  Maggie would be a better alternative.

  • It's nice, but a little too Southern for me. I have a friend whose daughter is Magnolia NN Maggie.
