High-Risk Pregnancy

Positive ffn

Happy Mother's Day ladies!! I'm new here. I went in to the dr. On Thursday for high blood pressure. While I was in there they hooked me up for a nst and realized I was having regular contractions. She did a ffn test and checked me. I wasn't dilated, but she sent me to labor and delivery for observation and to get injections to stop the contractions and steroid shot for babies lungs. While I was there the ffn came back positive. I'm only 32 weeks along. Anyone have any positive stories or any information they want to share?!

Re: Positive ffn

  • I had a positive FFN at 30 weeks 6 days. I was having contractions and starting to dilate and my cervix was shortening. I was on procardia and strict bed rest until 37 weeks. I delivered my perfect son at 38 weeks 6 days! It is definitely possible to have a full term baby after a positive FFN. Good luck!

I had a positive FFN and severe shortening of cervix diagnosed at 26 or 28 weeks with my last pregnancy (#3) and I ended up being induced at 39.5 weeks. I was on modified bedrest the remainder of the pregnancy though. I also got the steroid shots... I had to miss out on my family's life for a whole summer including [not] seeing my daughter serve as flower girl at my brother's wedding.... It sucked but I would do it a million times again to have my baby girl. ;)

  • I had a positive FFN at 24w3d. I was in the hospital with contractions caused by some wierd virus that they never found the cause of. I had already had a cerclage placed at 20w.
I'm not on bedrest but have been asked to take it very easy, no exercise, etc. My doc says the FFN is only one factor of many and isn't a clear indicator. A negative will tell them that labor isn't imminent. But a positive doesn't necessarily mean it is. Hope that helps.

  • Thank you for your positive stories. I never expected the test to come back positive...I've had a very easy pregnancy the whole time and didn't even realize I was having contractions! I am just going to have to learn to take it easy the next couple months!! Thanks again!

This is what my MFM said as well.  Best of luck (and 32w is obviously not ideal, but not catastrophic either - hope your LO stays in a while longer).

  • At 23 weeks I was taken out of work because I had started dilating.  Two weeks later, my OB said she wanted to do a fFN test.  She told me that a negative was a sure sign that labor wasn't coming and a positive was a 30% chance within like a couple weeks.  Mine was positive.  I have been going weekly since then for check-ups.  Im now almost 31 weeks, I haven't dilated any more, and everything seems to be going well.  My mindset from the very beginning, was that everything was going to go well with this pregnancy, and that I have to take each day as it comes.  I wouldn't take a positive lightly, but I was also told to not stress about it.  I wish you all the best and hope that you can keep little one in for a while longer.
