Plus Sized Baby Carriers

Hi. I went back several pages but didn't find a carrier post that addressed plus sized mommas specifically.

My question is what is the most comfortable carrier for a plus sized lady. I understand it will still vary for me as to what actually fits my needs but I need a jumping off point.

I do plan on making a ring sling as I have everything but the rings for that. But what else is out there!?

Thank you!

If you aren't familiar with all the options, my siggy link might be helpful for you.  Really any carrier can work for you - but as you noted, it's a good idea to try things on to see what is most comfortable.  Buckle carriers are the most difficult to get a perfect fit for any size wearer.  If that's something you are super interested in, I would suggest going with one of the makers like Kinderpack who offers plus size straps (in addition to a longer waist strap) - but you may or may not need those depending on your shirt size and how you carry your weight.

Wraps and ring slings really fit anyone - although you may want a longer size if you have a larger shirt size.  Mei tais give a "custom" fit as well - but you may want to go with longer straps.

  • This site has some resources. I've only recently found it so can't tell you how good it is but noted it had a babywearing section.

Likewise, the term plus size can be very misleading. I'm definitely plus sized, but I'm smaller on top and bigger on bottom, very pear shaped. My sister is bigger on top, more apple.  The two of us wear babies very differently.

I think no matter what your size, babywearing is a personal choice for people.  People like different carriers for a variety of reasons.  If there's anyway you can borrow some carrier and try them out before purchasing one, that's the best way to go. There are a couple of sites you can rent a carrier from and if you decide you like it, they credit part of your rental fee towards the purchase price.  You can find some using google. Best of luck.

  • I carry my weight in my hips. I'm a size 16. I own an Ergo sport, which I love, a size 6 Didymos, which I love, a Moby, which is fine, and a RS, which aggravates my neck injury. All of these fit my DH, who is not a little dude.

  • I'm fairly fluffy (5'7" and 250lbs abo). I got myself a Kinderpack after much consideration. I have it in the regular straps as well and it fits wonderfully. Most comfortable buckle carrier I've tried yet.

  • Thank you ladies! Ill definitely check out those resources. I know we are all different body wise. I just don't have a ton of money to keep buying carriers to try. :C

I have a Kinderpack and Tula. I prefer the Tula but both are great carriers.
