Our little girl is 7 weeks old and for about the last month she thrashes when she eats. She was also crying when she would eat which led us to believe it was reflux. The doctor put her on Zantac which has helped with the eating and crying. She still cries at least one bottle a day. So, the Zantac has seemed to help but she still thrashes/grunts/squirms and arches her back just about every time she eats. I'm thinking the Zantac isn't strong enough and we may need to go the Prevacid route. Does anyone have any idea what could be happening? Any experience? Anyone make the move from Zantac to Prevacid? She is formula fed and I will be calling the doc on Monday. So, any feedback in the mean time would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!
Re: Thrashing
I am going through the same thing for a few weeks now, I know my son doesn't have reflux so I have tried other things. I am breastfeeding and for the last week needing to supplement. I figured out that sometimes he hates when his arms whack him in the face and he also dislikes the tango we have to do with his arms getting in the way of his mouth when I am trying to offer a breast to him... to me it is funny but to him it is frustrating.
I also know he gets really mad and starts thrashing if he thinks the flow is too slow, (my breasts go from forceful letdown to barely a drop at a time by the end of the feeding). I knew it wasn't reflux because the moment I put him on a bottle with constant flow, he stops thrashing and grunting and crying. Also, he doesn't thrash/grunt/cry all the time, just when he is really tired or he decides that he doesn't like it this time around.
Have you tried burping her more? When my son takes a bottle I rub his tummy in the mean time and then when I burp him and get the biggest burps. I have also heard elevated feedings help with little ones with reflux.
