Cloth Diapering

Any advise for working parents?

We're trying to be efficient and yet make things easy for childcare and relatives. I have a tendency to give up on things if they become complicated for the people around me. I'm trying to endure. I so far have purchased only about 4 diapers (registered quite a few.) I want to trial different kinds. We're expecting in August and I intend to take 3 months off, but I'm concerned that pre-folds don't seem to fit our lifestyle.

I'm sure this question has been asked dozens of times, but I appreciate any help!

  • I was a single working parent for a long time with my daughter. I CD'd her just fine. She went to day care and everything. I suggest doing a stash full of pockets. I prefer Bum Genius 4.0 pockets, they are my favorite. I had 2 medium size wet bags for daycare. I would drop off my daughter each day with 6 diapers and a wet bag. When I picked her up the dipes would be in the wet bag and I would see how many were used and bring in the amount needed. So if there were 2 dipes left, I'd bring in 4 the next day. I would go home and emtpy the wet bag (seperating the inserts from the shells as I go) and place the dirty wet bag into the pail as well. I washed after work every other day. It's very doable.

  • Also to add to nana, kawaii has way nicer aplix. Our sitter really likes aplix instead of snaps because my kid is like a baby alligator and is impossible to change otherwise.

I second the aplix for daycare.  We like SoftBums and Rumparooz aplix a lot, but I hear Kawaii's is a lot like SoftBums and cheaper.  FWIW though none of those will fit a newborn, so you'll need something else (maybe Kawaii Pure and Naturals??  or fitteds and covers) for the first 2-8 weeks.

Also definitely get enough diapers that you can wash every two or three days.  More expensive up front, but it is a sanity keeper in the long run.  There will be days when you just don't get to the laundry.

  • We have a stash of aplix Kawaii solely for DC. I take all 10 of them in on Monday, and as I wash throughout the week I set them aside to take the next time DS needs dipes, which is normally Thursday (he generally uses 3 a day). They just store the extras with the other children's extra disposables which is in a cabinet that gets locked in the evenings and weekends.

  • If you're staying home for 3 months, your baby will fit one size well before starting daycare so you can trial different kinds and see what you like. DH and our parents prefer pockets (I stuff them), no preference between snaps and aplix. I have lots of different brands and the aplix is worn on all of them after only 4 months, snaps do hold up better.

I think the biggest thing for a working parent is a laundry routine. Do it the same time (ie every other night before bed) and it'll become automatic.

Awesome! I really appreciate all of the advise here! I was kiiiiiiiiiiiind of avoid the aplix because I knew there was longevity issues and I'm hoping to stash up and make it last (as everyone is, I'm certain.) I just feel so naive.

  • Ditto the pocket suggestion!

I went back to work when DD was 4 months old and wanted something "caregiver friendly" when I was choosing our diapers. Most of our daytime stash is BG 4.0's. After a lot of trial and error we found these diapers worked best for us and DD. I have a lot of prefolds, fitteds, and AIO's too, but the pockets are definitely a favourite of my mother who is our primary caregiver when DH and I are working.

I had the same feelings about solid, but then I fell in live with how easy it is. It's much easier to get a better fit and much quicker to put on a squirmy baby.

This exactly! I started our stash with 36 prefolds and 13 covers (9 covers being one size and 4 covers as size 1, which fit DD a lot better than one-size earlier on). Our stash remains this size and I wash every-other day with enough left for wash and dry time.
