Babies: 0 - 3 Months

Gas

My DD is two weeks old and seems to be uncomfortable after she eats. It looks like she is trying to go to the bathroom but, can't. Is there a way to tell if she has gas or not? Her input and output is good, just looks uncomfortable.

Re: Gas

  • My baby had this issue from day one and she is now 2 weeks. I bought Target brand gas drops located by the pharmacy and gave them to her before feedings and she seemed more at ease.

  • Her stomach will be clenched, and if you massage her lower stomach, she might pass gas easier. These might be signs that she is having gas bubble issues. Gas relief drops definitely help, and burping often during feeds, as well as not laying them down too quickly after eating, maybe 15 minutes.

  • My little man is 2 months and still has gas issues, we have found that dr. Browns bottles really help if you are formula feeding or bottle feeding

  • I second the Dr. Brown's bottles.  Expensive, but worth the price for your LO comfort!
  • My son had pretty bad gas from about week 2-5. He would tighten his stomach, pull up or kick his legs, and cry. The gas drops helped some (given right after eating) and holding him upright pretty much constantly seemed to help. But mostly he just had to grow out of it. Now he's 11 weeks and he passes gas like a pro! It was really hard but sometimes they just have to grow out of things and get a little stronger.
  • We've used Dr. Browns bottles from the beginning so I don't know how well they work compared to other brands. We've had some issues with gas but nothing serious or chronic. I can tell when she has gas while she feeds because she gets really tense and whines and seems to be in distress. When I stop and burp her, she is much calmer. It's worth spending some time burping during and after feedings, and waiting a little while before laying her down. If she doesn't burp and still has gas, laying her down will likely make her fussy, and then she'll burp when you pick her up.
